I find it interesting to note what music videos people are making on Youtube. I’m not hugely keen on 'official' videos, but I like seeing the fans interpretations. They are, mostly, very early stabs at film-making by complete lay-people and, I’m sure, might inspire people to go further. Also, sometimes the comments people leave are mini plays in themselves..

Of course, it is a fairly straightforward way of trying out your film ideas. It seems that where the music industry is losing out, the film industry may be gaining.

Anyway, I thought this thread might be interesting to put up any people may have found or music they feel would be interesting to use.

I’m learning how to do this myself at the moment for a particular project. There are some interesting tutorials to be found, also.

I have heard a rumour that Martin Scorsese once made a film which didn't have a Rolling Stones track on it

They do get used on a lot of other soundtracks as well

The Smiths music is used a lot in small 'indie' films, particularly from the US.

I noticed 'Please, please, please (let me get what I want)' in 'This is England' the other day - but it was a cover.

I love hearing David Bowie in a soundtrack. You often find the most thoughtful and innovative newer film makers using David Bowie I've noticed. Loved the Seu Jorge Bowie covers used in 'The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou' too.

This is the cover of The Smiths song used in 'This is England'. It isn't a patch on the original in my opinion, but not bad and fits very well with the film. This song has been covered by countless others including Muse.

The most well known Smiths song used in films is usually, I've found:

Another Smiths cover. There were two videos made of this - this one was just for the UK. Curious - it is a really odd little film.

I like the Mark Ronson cover though, I think he did well.

(If it won't work I think you have to click the title and it will take you straight to Youtube.)

Brubeck wrote a a series of pieces Time Further Out inspired by Miro Reflections Unsquare Dance probably the most popular of the set. Well worth a listen.
