McCABE AND MRS MILLER

I recently saw McCabe and Mrs Miller on DVD and was very impressed with the use of Leonard Cohen's songs. I have been a fan of Leonard Cohen for 30 years but have seen this film. I wasnt sure how many of Cohens songs were used before seeing the film, there actually three,"Stranger Song", which was also the main title theme,"Winter Lady." and "Sisters Of Mercy."



Mind you I dont think The Stranger Song will ever be regarded as one of the most catchy or tuneful film themes. Mucht as I revere Leonard Cohen his melodies are dirge like, but having said that all three songs fit nicely in to the film.

Coming at it from a slightly different perspective, I haven't counted Cohen among my favorite songwriter-singers but enjoy many of Robert Altman's films. McCabe & Mrs. Miller is among my all-time favorites. However the use of Cohen's songs, with their sometimes melancholy, wistful feel, was well-done.

Cohen's songs work beautifully, adding to the deliciously languid mood of the film. Did you catch LC on tour, bhowells? I saw him at Westerpark, Amsterdam, last July and in Birmingham in November. Sublime.
