    Evil Under the Sun (1982)
    ITV1 ... Saturday 4th February 2012 ... 1.40-3.55pm

    Daphne Castle ... 'Arlena and I were in the chorus of a show together, not that I could ever compete. Even in those days, she could always throw her legs up in the air higher than any of us ... and wider ...'

    One of my favourite film adaptations of an Agatha Christie novel ... an oustanding cast, a fiendishly clever murder-mystery, a brilliantly sharp screenplay by Anthony Schaffer, deftly directed by Guy (Goldfinger) Hamilton, with wonderful, atmospheric music by Cole Porter.

    Agatha Christie's classic murder mystery. Hercule Poirot sets out to uncover the truth behind the death of an glamorous stage actress at a secluded luxury hotel on an Adriatic island. However, the murder seems to be totally impossible ... everyone appears to have a perfect alibi.

    Peter Ustinov as Hercule Poirot;
    Dame Maggie Smith as Daphne Castle, Dame Diana Rigg as Arlena Marshall;
    Dennis Quilley, Colin Blakely, Jane Birkin, Nicholas Clay, James Mason, Roddy McDowall, Sylvia Miles
    Director: Guy Hamilton

    One of Agatha Christies's best stories. The film is much better than the book, owing to not a word of Christie's dialogue (never her strong point) being used! Dames Mag and Di are brilliant as old rivals, with an obviously colourful past. Gorgeous cozzies and Majorca has never looked lovelier.

    Not forgetting our own James Mason and Sylvia Miles - now there's an unlikely couple!

    Its a very entertaining film, perfect for a chilly winter afternoon, Roddy McDowell is hilarious as a very camp bitchy writer, dressed in sailor suit with cap etc. Very nice film.
