Tucked away in the schedules, on More 4 if you please, Xmas and Boxing Days, is Kevin Brownlow and Photoplay's superb documentary on the life and work of Cecil B.De Mille.

If you have seen KB's series Hollywood, or Cinema Europe, or his Trilogy on Chaplin, Keaton and Lloyd, or his works on DW Griffiths or Universal Horror films, then you'll know his standards....this is a 2x75min doc, so plenty of space to cover this remarkable director; followed on Xmas Day by a rare screening of a ...gasp....silent film!!!

I saw the doc at the NFT a year or so ago. It's fabulous.....and I don't think it's been on TV here before....

    Part 1, 13.55pm, 25/12

    Part 2, 13.20pm, 26/12

Thanks for the post, Penfold. Brownlow's service to cinema (in particular Silent Cinema and comedy) is immense. I have some of his books and also his series on Hollywood, Chaplin, Keaton and Lloyd. The depth he covers with interviewees who are no longer around is unmatched by anyone else. Will be watching with interest.

I noticed that there is a series about to start on BBC1 that fills in background to selected British films and it kicks off 7th Jan BBC1 at 10.45pm with Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Record it and have a useful companion to your DVD.

I love this picture of Mr. DeMille, found during a search for The Magic Box:

Original Caption: Pioneers. Cecil B. De Mille and his first camera, the magic box that filmed

all his Silent pictures, starting with the first edition of
    The Squaw Man (1939*). DeMille

is now preparing his sixty-third film
This Breed of Men, in which he will star Gary Cooper

1939! Where did they get that from? The director did, in fact, film this story three times: 1914, 1918 and 1931. The last version included Eleanor Boardman (my first subject at 'Silent Stars'), Roland Young, Charles Bickford, Warner Baxter AND Lupe Velez. What an exciting cast! Well worth seeing (if I get the chance).
