    Ah-ha me hearties. That is indeed the "proper version" with Robert Newton as Long John Silver.



    Whenever anyone does an impersonation of a pirate they will usually do an impersonation of Robert Newton as Long John Silver in this film - despite the influence of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.



    Robert Newton did an exaggerated version of his own Dorset accent and that became the standard "pirate voice". He's now the patron saint of International Talk Like A Pirate Day - which is coming up soon, on September 19th. Unleash Your Inner Buccaneer

    Though I think mostly Brits are doing an impersonation of Tony Hancock impersonating Robert Newton - the film itself doesn't turn up that often.
