It was Sim's third film .... I watched his first film (The Riverside Murder) recently. He played a comic cop in much the same way as he did Sgt Bingham, but not as skillfully. It was interesting to see how much he had developed in the 4yrs between that film and Inspector Hornleigh.

He made 5 films in 1935 (the glorious days of the quota quickie)
The only ones the IMDb has any release data for are
The Case of Gabriel Perry - May 1935
The Private Secretary - September 1935
so it's hard to say which was really the order for any of the others. They could have been before, after or between those two.

Wikipedia nominate The Case Of Gabriel Perry as his first film.

Regardless of that, the point I was making is that it is apparent that Sim had learned a lot about film acting in the time between these two films, as his performance as Sgt Bingham in Inspector Hornleigh is far more accomplished than the one he gave in The Riverside Murder.

Guy Hamilton, J B Priestley and Sim so it must be An Inspector Calls. A rare intimate drama for Hamilton and evidence that he could get great performances out of actors in nearly single set dramas as well as large scale, glossy movies.

Thats the joke that killed the Music Hall !

An Inspector Calls. A very fine film indeed, but not as good as a well produced version of the play.

Well done!

It seems plausible (but unconfirmed) that The Case Of Gabriel Perry was indeed his first film as he only had a bit part and it was released in May '35

No doubt he learnt a lot quite quickly after his first year of making films

It is fascinating watching him in those early films, you can almost see the technique attaching itself to him. I would have loved to have been able to see him on stage.
