I can't believe that nobody has even made a guess based on Steve's helpful clues but here's the nice Cockney

Thought so from the first picture, but the second floored me as he looks more like a station master than a lighthouse keeper!

He's just arrived in North Wales by train - and is puzzled by the Welsh names and by the station mistress (dressed in full traditional costume) talking in Welsh

Have you seen it?

Ah, now I remember. It was a while ago, a grainy print, late, and a dark, dismal storm-swept night after a long day... perfect for the lighthouse sequences of the film. In fact the captain's image capture is so perfect it bears no relationship whatsoever to my print so I think I should get extra marks for getting it.

I don't have a film handy (here at work ) so go ahead anyone...

The Phantom Light is being released on dvd soon (with Red Ensign and some completely unrelated film that I can't remember now) so we'll all have a chance to refresh our memories. IIRC it's pretty good with a decent budget for location filming.

Expected 29 July, pre-order from Amazon.com

The Phantom Light is a very decent thriller/mystery with quite a few comedic touches thrown in. It's also very unusual to have that much location shooting back in the 1930s. Stars Gordon Harker, Ian Hunter & Binnie Hale

The Red Ensign is a good bit of industrial drama. Ostensibly about the decline in the British shipping industry it can be taken as a message about the decline in many other things as well (like film-making). Stars Leslie Banks, Carol Goodner and a young(ish) John Laurie.

This one is commercially available and involves no well-dressed lighthouse-keepers
