If it is George in civvy street, that's quite a demob suit!
I suppose the problem is, George could have slipped into drag in any of his films without disturbing the plot at all. My bet is he's in disguise - doing his sub-private detective thing. But that doesn't narrow it down much really.
Not a film I've seen, I think.
I don't suppose Penfold has done an April 1 on us and this is George in ... Real Life. That would explain the policeman, though not his apparent disinterest.

My Google-fu leads me to believe that George drags himself up in I See Ice but I guess we'll have to wait for Penfold's return from the Nottingham Silent Filmfest to find out the answer.

I was working on the assumption that Princess Anne was an equestrian clue and that would make it Come On George. You never know

That's the joke that killed the Music Hall

You never do. I'm slightly surprised that none of us actually remember it (well, not surprised about me since I've never managed to sit through a whole Formby film!). Surely you chaps have more staying power though! Did he drag up in many of his films?

Have we named them all yet?

On the basis of there being a suitcase in the pic I'll go for South American George (also cos the brilliant Linden Travers is in it).

Any excuse for a picture of the lovely Linden ....

I love that in The Lady Vanishes she gets completely different lighting from everyone else so she looks all glowing. Mind you, you'd need to be on an astral plane to think Mr Todhunter a good catch...

Right on both counts...

So sorry, I was going to answer it myself before going, but forgot....it's been a busy few days; Bristol to Nottingham for Thursday and Friday, back here to work the Grand National, back up to Nottingham for Saturday night and Sunday, back again last night. 600 miles by road, about 20 silent film sessions/papers/speeches, 3500 bets, some alcohol and lots of caffeine, lots of talking about film and making friends... and about twelve hours sleep over the four days.....was it worth it...
Hell yes, it's the best run, most friendly festival in the world....you always learn such a lot, I would encourage anyone interested in thirties/forties British film to come and learn where it all came from...and now I'm going back to bed.
By the way Captain, how did you know about me and Nottingham, do we know each other??

Bit of a Bay Window, what??

It's the only time I've seen him do it....I wasn't a Formby fan either, apart from No Limit, I bought the Formby boxed set as requested by a friend in The States and I was checking the discs before it went over. Have to say I was pleasantly surprised by how interesting some of them were....in particular, Turned Out Nice Again is an early Ealing in every sense, dying traditional old business versus new ruthless concern, social issues (Unemployment queues, bailiffs, buying on tick, love versus family duty, men obsessing over hobbies) and Edward Chapman....you could almost slot Alec Guinness in the Formby role. What was AG like with a ukelele I wonder..... Give it a go Captain, you won't regret it....

Those RAF boys certainly know how to have a good time. It's Basil Radford under the lampshade BTW
