I haven't seen the above film for years, I remember it as being quite good. However, we are looking for an even earlier film! Big clue coming up! The main player in the film often appeared with his equally famous wife, although not in this particular outing.

Start every day with a smile and get it over with.

I thought the loathesome Sonnie Hale was the conductor in Friday the Thirteenth. If you stop your ears whenever his appalling nasal whine can be heard, it's a pretty good film though.

ETA Love on Wheels?

I can't recall who played the bus conductor in Friday the Thirteenth
but Love on Wheels it is!

Mad guess The Chilton Hundreds, and Bats, tell us what you think of Sonnie Hale!

Start every day with a smile and get it over with.

Not the Chiltern Hundreds. Though you do have the right actor.

Has anyone ever come up with a plausible explanation of how Hale got so many fabulous women to sleep with him before the invention of Rohypnol? Surely he wasn't that influential?

He's all right, I quite liked his performance in First A Girl.

Also, he's a lucky blighter to have 'known' the young Jessie.

Was he involved with Evelyn Laye and Jessie Matthews at the same time? I certainly don't have the answer to why he was so popular with women, maybe he was a first class lover?!

Jessie was cited in Hale's divorce from Evelyn.

Ol' Sonnie was quite a good looking chap ....

Chili Bouchier was also involved in some way though it's ages since I've read her book so I can't remember the exact details. (as a piece of trivia, she later bagged Howard Hughes, something you won't find in The Aviator).

Hale is still just about the most annoying person to appear on screen in the 1930s though (well, in a feature film, anyway. Obviously there's some rather more annoying people in newsreels). I watched Let's Be Famous yesterday in which Basil Radford is unlucky enough to be cast as Sonnie Hale's stooge and spends the whole film in a state of apoplectic rage (presumably at his agent - 'I've just done three Hitchcocks and now you give me this?').

Nope, not Hotel Sahara. The film is mostly set in Broadcasting House, as you can see from the picture. Giveaway clues tomorrow, if necessary.
