I'll give it you! Chili played a shoplifter in Purse Strings, ditto Joan in No Room at the Inn and Margaret in Trouble in Store. Pat was arrested in the 1950s for shoplifting.
As for penfold's puzzle, I'm only really sure of Asquith. Could at a stretch be Val Hobson, and I was going for Boyle until Aarky went all Moody on me! Wild guess they've all appeared in versions of Frankenstein apart from Asquith who directed one (on stage?) |

![]() This is Ron Moody ... I think the other bloke looks more like Peter Boyle, although I still don't think it's him. Bats. Bats. |

I didn't say I thought it was Ron Moody (I didn't think so)... I said the photo looked like a cross between Peter Boyle and Ron Moody.

I'm no expert on that era, the signiture suggests Betty - Compson, Bronson, Balfour. The latter being the biggest British star in silent cinema, but I don't think it's any of those. The Val lookalike reminds me of someone, there's a touch of Ida Lupino and Loretta Young. However, Ida was very blonde in her British period. penfold has mentioned Cottage on Dartmoor in previous posts, and is very knowledgable on this period in cinema. Doesn't help I'm afraid!

Is the mystery man screenwriter Thomas Phipps, Joyce Grenfell's brother and nephew of Nancy Astor. That's a suggestion by Mrs Bat, my resident Grenfell expert.
