As for penfold's puzzle, I'm only really sure of Asquith. Could at a stretch be Val Hobson, and I was going for Boyle until Aarky went all Moody on me! Wild guess they've all appeared in versions of Frankenstein apart from Asquith who directed one (on stage?)

This is Ron Moody ... I think the other bloke looks more like Peter Boyle, although I still don't think it's him.

Don't get frustrated my friend, I know you didn't say that ... the post was a ref for joenoir who,

like me, couldn't make up his mind between the two. I don't think it's either of them any more .... I think it's that Ron Boyle or that other fella, Peter Moody

That pic must've been taken not long before he died. I don't think it's Mr Boyle, different shaped nose and ears. I bet Penfold will be havin' a laugh when he reads this lot!!!!

Didn't Ron Moody do a werewolf film in the 70s?

I'm no expert on that era, the signiture suggests Betty - Compson, Bronson, Balfour. The latter being the biggest British star in silent cinema, but I don't think it's any of those. The Val lookalike reminds me of someone, there's a touch of Ida Lupino and Loretta Young. However, Ida was very blonde in her British period. penfold has mentioned Cottage on Dartmoor in previous posts, and is very knowledgable on this period in cinema. Doesn't help I'm afraid!

It's Betty Compson or Balfour, now that you written the name I can almost make it out.

Is the mystery man screenwriter Thomas Phipps, Joyce Grenfell's brother and nephew of Nancy Astor. That's a suggestion by Mrs Bat, my resident Grenfell expert.
