Which is again correct, although you've got it arse upwards! So what are you going to say about that, Mr Batman?!

I have to give it to Windthrop ..... Nolan is the OOO.

Rathbone (TCF - Universal), Toler (TCF - Monogram) ) and Weismuller (MGM - RKO) all moved with their series when they changed studios. Nolan appeared in all the TCF 'Shayne' films .... but when the series moved to PRC the part was played by Hugh Beaumont.

Bats.

ps - that picture isn't me, he's much better looking than I am!

I'll re-do that -

Only Nolan stayed with the same studio during the run of the series

Well done Windthrop! A really enjoyable OOO, Batman! I really enjoyed those film series of the 1940s.

Me too. I watched 'Tarzan Finds A Son' earlier today, great stuff. I have a boxed of both the Oland and Toler 'Chans', they may vary in quality but they are still really enjoyable. I love the Nolan 'Shayne' films but the Beaumont ones are pretty grim. I wish they would release the Nolan ones on DVD, they are fantastic, probably the best of the US 40s B-movie detective series.

I actually think that despite the obvious low-budget 'Hollywood' England in the Rathbone/Bruce Universal entries they are quite atmospheric and one or two The Scarlet Claw and Faces Death etc are top notch

I have to agree ... those two are my favourites of the Universal 'Holmes' series. I love that series and have the remastered box set. My reason for saying that IMHO the 'Shayne' series is the best is that all seven of them are top notch, whereas the really good Rathbone 'Holmes' pictures are bookended by two or three real stinkers, but I suppose it's inevitable that out of 13 films one or two are going to be poor. It was the same with the 'Boston Blackie' series, several good films and two or three stinkers.

The Charlie Chans are on my list and are a definate buy after your recommendation, Bats. It's a while since I've viewed any of the Michael Shaynes, and there is always a worry they will not be as good as you recall. You can buy the first set out on region 1 now.

All have played both Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson except Christopher Lee who has played both Sherlock and Mycroft Holmes.

Brett played Holmes on TV and Watson on stage.
Reginal Owen was Watson to Clive Brook and was Holmes in A Study in Scarlet
MacNee was Holmes in Hound of London and was Watson to both Roger Moore and Christopher Lee
Lee was Mycroft on Private Life of ... and was Holmes in Deadly Necklace and The Golden Years mini series
