Here's half an idea...

Dean Jagger was in Game of Death, starring a four-years deceased Bruce Lee, whose non-action scenes were filmed with doubles.
Clark Gable was in Saratoga with Jean Harlow, who died before filming completed and had her remaining scenes completed by Mary Dees.

Am I on the right lines?

'Brian Jones was in the Rolling Stones'...

Sounds like a song by Half Man Half Biscuit, along the lines of 'Charlton Heston Put his Vest On'.

He sang harmony on songs like "I Wanna Be Your Man" and "Walkin the Dog".
But what's being the singer got to do with anything?
