    name='moonfleet']Shakespeare ??
    Shakespeare is always a worthwhile guess for any quotation. Most are either from Shakespeare or the Bible.

    But this one is from Thomas Gray's 1751 poem - Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard:

    Far from the madding crowd's ignoble strife,

    Their sober wishes never learn'd to stray;

    Along the cool sequester'd vale of life

    They kept the noiseless tenor of their way.

    The phrase "Far From the Madding Crowd" was then used by Thomas Hardy for his 1874 novel.

    When you hear it languishing

    and hooing and cooing and sidling through the front teeth,

    the oxford voice

    [or worse still]

    the would-be oxford voice

    you don't even laugh anymore, you can't.

    For every blooming bird is an oxford cuckoo nowadays,

    you can't sit on a bus nor in the tube

    but it breathes gently and languishingly in the back of your neck.

    (1929)

    " Are the violets already here !

    Show me ! I tremble so much to hear it, that even now

    on the threhold of spring, I fear I shall die.

    Show me the violets that are out. "

    (1917)

    In French, but it should be easy .....

    Which book debut is this ??

    "Le soleil du matin baignait d'une lumière ambrée le chateau de Blandings, caressant de ses rayons revigorants les murs couverts de lierre, les vastes étendues de verdure, les jardins, les communs et les dépendances, sans oublier les quelques habitants de l'endroit qui se trouvaient dehors à cet instant précis. Il éclairait des pelouses verdoyantes et de vastes terrasses, des arbres séculaires et d'éclatants parterres. Il luisait sur les plis que faisait le fond de culotte d'Angus Mc Allister, jardinier en chef du neuvième comte d'Emsworth, alors que, penché en avant avec cet air revèche et résoluque l'on connait aux Ecossais, il arrachait une limace de la feuille de laitue sous laquelle elle revassait."

    And, to be complete, which ending is this one ?? ( before a conclusion) :

    "My father has a copy of the report of the Imperial Commission, with the signatures of all who were present at the proceedings, attached in verification of the statement. It is from this official paper that I have summarized my account of this last shocking scene."
