Used to wear them alot myself - under a jacket. They never quite look right IMHO without a jacket.

Chunky sweaters without a jacket look OK IMHO ... but thin ones often leave a lot to be desired. Jackets are definitely best with those ones.

Black ones look nice with a nice light coloured casual jacket ...

That's right. Turtle necks are really just high cut crew necks.

I've got a "thing" about men in polo-neck sweaters. I instinctively want to cuddle them. Most appealing.

Example... see the second photo. (I couldn't copy it, not allowed.)

I remember them being popular with kids my age back in 1967 because the coolest man on planet Earth used to wear them - David McCallum. TMFU.

The polo neck/turtle neck worn by men is right up there with a cravat or corduroy blazer with elbow patches as identifying the wearer as a pretentious twat

Maybe in the circles you move in .... but around here, polo/turtle/roll necks are for decisive men of action like Bullitt, Kuryakin, Bond and Bodie .... Banacek was a bit pretentious but you can't have everything!
