Ringu and Misery both have single scenes that shook me more than many modern slashers; the "WTF!" scene in Ringu and the ye olde punishment in Misery (I still put my hand over my eyes).

Also enjoyed Skeleton Key despite the lukewarm critical reception, and The Lost Boys is good for a laugh.

After much mental tussling I settled, albeit a tad releuctantly on the following in no particular order

The Haunting ( original version )
Aliens
Theatre of Blood
Quatermass 2
Rosemary's Baby
The Howling
Halloween

Night of the Demon and Dracula ( Hammer version ) were first reserves I would have included the Wicker Man but left it out since I can never make up my mind if it really qualifies as a horror film. By the same token the original version of The Vanishing is horrifying but would probably fall into the category of psychological thriller.

Well, in the end I followed my list, except I swapped 'Night of the Eagle' for 'Mary Shelley's Frankenstein' - mainly because my friend had never seen John Cleese's performance in it.

I know 'Mary Shelley's Frankenstein' is largely looked down upon... but I consider it quite a nice version of the story.

I remember going to the cinema to see it when it first came out, Kenneth Brannagh was the golden boy of brit cinema at the time, did you ever see "Dead Again"? that was entertaining in a trashy kind of way. Anyway, I also quite like his Frankenstein movie, John Cleese is good in it, though I think the film seems a little overblown now with all those giddy swirling camera movements for no apparent reason....to inject exitement I guess but I often wish the camera would just stay still for a moment in many of the scenes.........and I think dear old Ken really wanted to show that he had been to the gym a lot in preparation for this movie as he quite often throws his top off and dashes about his lab bare chested showing off a fairly toned upper body.......I did enjoy the film though its very watchable, I think it was on TV a couple of months ago. It reminds me a little of the James Mason Michael Sarrazin TV movie from the 70s " Frankenstein The True Story" that was pretty good as well as I remember it and has been discussed in another thread here.

Yeps... I also saw it at the cinema when it first came out also. There are some great moments in it. I didn't have a problem with the camera movements, and thought Helena Bonham Carter running, burning through the hallway was brilliant... but some parts of the movie have aged a bit. I don't believe I've ever seen 'Dead Again' though.

I hunted 'Frankenstein: The True Story' down a few years ago to watch it again. I had fond memories of it... and I'd met Leonard Whiting a few times and wished to see it again. I must admit it disappointed rather... but perhaps my expectations were running rather high.

I'll have to search for the discussion here on that movie

Another British film that gets little mention is The Skull starring Peter Cushing i love that film and it may be classed as silly now but still love watching it.

Default favourite horrors

A film I watched as a youngster frightened me to death "Invaders from Mars" with Leif Erikson. Having seen it since I am amazed it scared me, it is so hammy.

My favourite Horror

Night of The Demon
Dead of Night,
Quatermass 2 and Quatermass and the Pit
The Curse of the Werewolf

The Omen
The Shining
The Fog
Them

Is that the one with the cursed skull that floats? I haven't seen that since I was a young teen.

I so very wish I had that on DVD... its one of my favourites also.

The Horror Movie Marathon wasn't really to do with favourites though... just a selection to share with a friend. My list is coloured by trying to take my friend in an unexpected direction and not showing him movies he has already seen.

I agree ... it is a well made and lively production and Branagh is so gloriously OTT that you can't help but like him. I would have liked a more dynamic performance from the Creature though.

Bats.

I like Branagh's Frankenstein too; similarly with Coppola's Dracula - both work very well if you view them as gothic pantomime rather than straight horror (much like Hammer really).

'A Company of Wolves' was, when it first came out, one of the very few Horror movies ever to give me a bit of a chill... not a big chill but a bit of a chill

Nice to see Polanski's 'Repulsion' mentioned... I adore Polanski's work... however, being Autistic... I have a falling out with 'Twisted Nerve' that I cannot really get past.

Default Horror Marathon

My choices would be, in no particular order:

Dog Soldiers
Fiend Without A Face
The Exorcist
Night Of The Demon
Halloween
The Shining
Wolfen
Brides Of Dracula
Salems Lot

Then off to bed with a crucifix, garlic, a bottle of holy water and a double barrel shotgun
