Just try and overlook the CGI aspects and enjoy the experience......sometimes you don't need things like that to get in the way of the overall enjoyment of the film....
I think in a film with the depth & magnitude of LOTR it would be virtually impossible to make the CGI "unnoticable" but that shouldn't detract from ones thrill at the visual effects.
The only other filmed version of LOTR that I can remember was a poorly received animated version that I saw back in the late 70's......Have there been other versions....?

Try watching it again? No thank you.

I did watch the whole thing. I felt like winding it through to the end during the first 10 minutes - and at various other times through it

How can you overlook the CGI aspects when they're thrown in your face so much?

It was the late 70s animated version that I saw. It may have been poorly received by some people but it was very well received by me and my friends

Its funny isn't it that I can enjoy the films you admire ( A matter of Life & Death) etc.......and also enjoy some of the modern CGI blockbusters (Spiderman, Harry Potter)
I don't "ask" anything of a film......just let it entertain me.

It's not just that it's got CGI in it that I don't like. When it's used well it can be a very useful and a very effective tool. But in films like this and in others like Avatar I feel that they force the CGI into your face, and that's to the detriment of the story. Avatar didn't have much of a story anyway so if you don't like the way they used the CGI (which is different to not liking CGI) then there isn't much left.

With LotR they started off with a brilliant and much loved story. If they detracted something from it with in-your-face bad and unnecessary special effects then there's still a lot of that great story left.

I don't ask much of a film and I like it when it entertains me. But I don't like it when it insults me

Unlike many people I was not that impressed with Avatar (that could possibly be because I saw it on television and not in the cinema) and agree that all the CGI is pointless without a good storyline.
One thing I will say in defence of LOTR is that it is best appreciated on a large cinema screen, and maybe you did not see it with that benefit.....?
I'm very much looking forward to The Hobbit......another of my favourite books...
    Cheers

Talking of not finishing films, I remember a comment in the lat 70s about Tommy, in the NME. A writer referred to an exchange in the NME offices regarding Ken Russell's divisive classic: "One of the few films I have ever walked out of." said journo 1. "One of the few films I have never walked into." responded journo 2. Even after 30 years it still makes me chortle. I'm chortling now.

That's the one Cary Grant film that makes me cringe. Great book, crappy Hollywood movie.
