First you've got to find a film that has actually made a profit, after taking into account all the grants and other state funding and all the advertising costs.

Then compare that to all the films that don't make a profit

Then you can ask if films are helping the economy

Too many of the wrong people, making the wrong films in Britain IMHO.

I mean who cares outside Britain about some statement about Thatcher and the 1980s .

Does Pedro the carpenter in outer Mongola really want to pay out his hard earned cash to see a film about British skinheads of the 1970s?

They talk about the Americans being isolationist and numb to the outside world, but some of the dull navel gazing flop films made by the British in the last 30 years take some beating.

It does n't matter if the subject is insular if the theme is universal. The biggest film hit for two generations was about a civil war (Gone with the Wind) you can't get any more navel gazing than that.

The Full Monty a big world hit a very English film about the consequences of unemployment, Gregory's Girl a very Scottish film, Gosford Park afilm about class how English can you get. If the film is good enough ( and gets distributed) it will find it's audience.

Audiences on Broadway seem happy to hand over $100 to find out if the son of a striking Durham miner gets into the Royal Ballet School during the 1980s. In fact, Billy Elliot is opening in South Korea later this year which really does show that a good story can have world-wide appeal.
