Christopher Lee is hoping that, before too long, he will be able to re-dub his Sherlock Holmes with his own voice in place of the dub for a DVD release... whether it will come to pass or not is another question.

the original model and inspiration for Holmes probably had a very strong Scots accent, considering he was an Edinburgh surgeon and university lecturer (Dr Bell) But was the character Sherlock Holmes English? The dubbed character was in fact Baskerville, who would have had a US accent in the story. Martin Shaw was dubbed and we are assuming it was because his US accent was rubbish. I have not seen a Holmes film where the great man has been dubbed, apart from the German Christopher Lee one.

Robert Stephens in The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes

But my all time fav has to be Jeremy Brent, for me he was the epitome of Sherlock Holmes.
I really think Basil Rathbone is one of the best ever too, but he is not my favorite, there is a difference.

Incidentally, I think I'm right in saying that the Arthur Wontner 1932 The Sign Of Four is the only version where Dr Watson gets the girl? Nigel Stock didn't on the BBC, nor did David Healy in the Ian Richardson film.

Presumably that's why the makers ditched Wontner's regular Watson, Ian Fleming, for the hunkier Ian Hunter.

The Sign Of Four was made by a different production company from Wontner's other Holmes films. You are right in your reasoning for them not having Fleming on board for that one. I can't think of another version where Watson gets the girl, you may be right with that too.

Surely not the most popular choice, but my favourite Holmes simply has to be Robert Stephens, just for being the most human of them all.

Holmes gets the girl in this version. It's pretty ghastly.

But that one is an original screenplay .... not a Doyle story. It is a pretty crap film though ... as is the other Brook Holmes film.

There was a strange hopping boy in one of the Rathbone films .... Spider Woman IIRC. Most odd.
