ANY chick flick that is shoved down our throats and popular i.e can`t stand Mama mia even though I have never seen it!

Do any of you guys have a film or films that you dislike for no good reason - or, at least, for reasons that have little to do with the film itself?
For me, the main candidate would be Betty Blue.
I've never actually seen it, but I hate it because, shortly after it came out, someone whose taste I held in contempt told me it was the best movie she'd ever seen (it was also, probably, about the 5th movie she'd ever seen). Right there and then I decided that I loathed this film and would rather bite off my own leg than see it. And so far I've kept my word.
Any others?

Many!! 'avatar' -although i've never seen it (and never will) i
deplore it for its use of CGI,for me the film was made as a trailer for the advanced levels of Computer Game Images and is Complete Grief Inducement! I'd go as far as saying that it's a Crap Gratuitous Idyll!
I have many irrational dislikes and the forum is already privvy to many of them!

You are right Jaycad. Things like that aren`t `proper` films to me, they are just experiments mainly produced by people who sit on thier asses at a computer rather than being involved in everything about the exciting art of film production i.e location and the real expression on the face of actors . I don`t see what the people involved get out of doing it any other way to be honest.
I have seen Avatar and still stick to my view.

The LoTR trilogy; I'm not sure why (maybe the geekdom of fans) but something caused me to dislike it before I'd even seen it!
And ALL big screen adaptations of classic tv series - I watched the dreadful A-Team film and my only thought was what possessed Liam Neeson to appear (I know, money).
I was just about to respond to some of the views on here and then I realised people have already admitted their views are irrational - so does that makes my responses irrational or does an irrational response to irrational post become rational![]()

I feel the same way about the Harry Potter films!
The words `Our throats and shoved down` spring to mind!

I agree with both sentiments! The trailer for the big screen version of 'brideshead revisited' relied upon the phrase "what exactly does charles ryder want?" a) it's not a thrillername='DB7' date='27 June 2010 - 11:34 AM' timestamp='1277634844' post='444945']

the phrase doesn't appear in the novel or the excellent ITV adaptation so F*** off!!

I don't agree. I haven't seen Avatar, but I think you should take it as a cartoon, rather than a 'proper' film. Disney used the technique of filming actors and then drawing over their images to produce realistic human movement, but I don't think that's a reason to dismiss Snow White or Cinderella. The whole point of Avatar is that it is a story told using cutting edge technology; it's a state-of-the-art film - an exercise, if you like, and if there isn't a decent story there, it will fade as the technology moves on. But if there is a decent story (and some people who have seen it have told me that there is) then people in 2020 will overlook the clunky 2009 CGI and still enjoy it.
I get more annoyed when CGI takes over in a film which is nominally not about CGI. At least Avatar is an honest CGI cartoon, in that respect.
I got annoyed with Mars Attacks, but not because of the film, which is only boring (IMHO), but because Tim Burton said he wanted to do the Martians with stop-frame, like a 1950s B-movie, but that it would have taken 4 or 5 years to finish. I doubt it took Ray Harryhausen five years to make It Came From Beneath the Sea or 20 Million Miles to Earth (willing to be corrected) so why can't Burton be honest and say he just couldn't be bothered? Too much work.
Talking of Ray Harryhausen, from a recent interview (http://entertainment.timesonline.co....cle7143290.ece) (my bold)...
He’s incredulous about the vast crews employed on contemporary action and fantasy films. “You read the credits for films today and there are a thousand people working on one thing. It’s vulgar the expense — $200 million to make a film! We made the 7th Voyage for $650,000.”
There’s a Scout’s make-do-and- mend ingenuity to Harryhausen’s work. He confides, as we admire the magnificent Medusa, that he would have preferred to give her red eyes, but because he had to use existing doll’s eyes, that wasn’t possible. It wouldn’t have occurred to him to waste money on having them specially made.
....
“I always say films were invented for fantasy, otherwise they just become propaganda. Now the films are so serious — everybody has a gun and they are shooting everybody.”
So what does he make of the massive technological advances in cinema special effects? “Well I think CGI is a wonderful tool, but only a tool. I don’t think it’s the be all and end all. The whole point of making a film is to entertain, or so I thought. Not to give you somebody else’s propaganda.”
Now; back to the question...
Surely these are all dislikes with a rational basis. Just like my refusal to watch any film directed by a Capricorn...

No it's Under Capricorn that should n't be watched ( apart from the scene of Cecil's ablutions obviously)
Rowdon, i hate cartoons so that would just double my dislike!(now that's irrational!)

I used to insist that we watch the Sunday evening film on ITV so I did n't miss the Merry Melody Cartoon that followed and woe betide anyone if turned out to a be a Daffy Duck.

I like the LOTR films, but I know what you mean. I suspect "guilt by association" is a common cause of disliking perfectly blameless movies.
Imagine they brought out a great new DVD edition of The Wild Bunch (insert your own fave here) and you picked it up in HMV, drool pouring from your mouth, only to see the following quote on the cover:
"The greatest film ever made - Paul Ross".
I mean, you'd be in a terrible position, wouldn't you?

But that's perfectly rational.
I also hate it in the 'classic rock' world when we get quotes from Elvis Costello or Bono (it always seems to be them) plasterd all over remastered CDs, or doing interviews with legends from the past. It's like an "appproved by Bono" sticker on a CD that is light years better than anything U2 could come up with and/or not in the same musical area, even. I love to hear about a recording engineer's reminiscences, or a Chicago DJ's opinions, or a session musician's memories but I don't want to hear Costello telling me how he first heard Bacharach or how much he's into Wanda Jackson. I don't need their approval.
I'm sorry, I've ranted again, fairly rationally.
I once saw a film with the otherwise wonderful Adriana Ozores, and irrationally hated it because of her haircut - it was a thick affair, cut very 'wide' ... I remember hating Crystaltips and Alistair for the same reason - wide hair. Now that's irrational.
I have tried to watch Batman Returns on 7 different occasions including 2 visits to the conema.
On every occasion I have fallen asleep within the first 20 minutes.
I'm a massive fan of Batman and love the movies, TV series from the 60s and the rake of cartoon series from the 90s to present. I also love Catwoman and the Penguin, great characters. Michelle Pfeiffer in a leather catsuit also truly tickles my fancy so why can't I stay awake? I've even tried watching it just after waking up from a long nights sleep.
Now that's what I call irrational! My mind says yes but my body just shuts down.

With you on that one jaycad. Not what I would call 'proper film-making'. I was delighted when it didn't win the Best Picture AA.
My irrational dislike would have to be The Sound of Music. I like Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer, but I just can't stand that film.![]()
