Could be media speculation, but I read somewhere that Johnny Depp - one of the finest actors

of his generation - is to play Dr Who in a new film version of the Time Lord.

I hope not. Yanks should not apply! But the character is called The Doctor not Doctor Who. In the Peter Cushing movies however he was referred to by that incorrect moniker.

Also, apart from a bigger budget I'm not sure what a Doctor Who movie would achieve?

Is it the silly season for the newspapers already? Casting a Doctor Who film is one of the old standbys for then.

The same as every movie.... Studio profits.

If you think they care beyond that you're sadly mistaken. There's no element of 'giving the fans what they want', bringing something new to the format or adding to the well established Dr Who universe, it's all about the money and the potential for the 10 sequels to keep making money.

I hope my favorite actress Helena will be the assistant

It would be cool to have a Gothic style episode!

This may or may not be true...

Below is a partial article taken from a Doctor Who Blog & a link to the complete article is below that..

When I recently mentioned in a post that Digital Spy often uses lies and snippets of or simply fake quotes to make entire pieces of "news", many people on the Chatango and in the comments were surprised that the faithful DS would do such a thing. Well, ladies and gentlemen and trolls of the Internet, here's the proof. Before I explain this, however, I'd like to mention that I am only using Digital Spy as an example of a much wider problem. Anywho, today Digital Spy posted a ridiculous and clearly untrue article:

Johnny Depp has been linked to a movie version of Doctor Who.

According to website Tor, an article appeared on PubArticles which allegedly quoted former showrunner Russell T. Davies.

Davies reportedly said that he was in the process of developing a Doctor Who movie and promised that the Daleks would be involved. However, the article was later removed.

Tor has now claimed that sources in the film industry have confirmed that Depp will star in a Doctor Who film, which would be released in 2012.

It is unclear how genuine the reports are as Davies has previously said that he has no plans to make a Doctor Who movie.

Johnny Depp to appear in Doctor Who Film?

I recall reading the changes were done on purpose due to some differences the producers had with the BBC so AARU got permission from Terry Nation to do the story about "The Daleks" which he owned the rights to and made the film anyway. In the film he is a human scientist with the surname Who and not an alien called "The Doctor"

    Film Doctor from wikipedia;

Dr. Who is a character in two films made by AARU Productions in the 1960s based on the long-running BBC television science-fiction series Doctor Who. He was portrayed by the actor Peter Cushing.

Although based upon the character of the Doctor from the television series, the character has fundamental differences as described below. The character appeared in two motion picture releases: Dr. Who and the Daleks, which was based upon the televised serial The Daleks, and Daleks' Invasion Earth: 2150 A.D., based upon the serial The Dalek Invasion of Earth. Plans for a third film, based on The Chase, were abandoned after the poor box office performance of the second film.

Dr. Who is a gentle, grandfatherly figure, naturally curious and sometimes absent-minded, but at the same time is not afraid to fight for justice. He is shown to have a keen (and somewhat juvenile) sense of humour, and a strong sense of adventure with a will of iron and very strong morals.

Unlike the Doctor in the television series, he is apparently human, not a Time Lord, and is actually named "Dr. Who" (first name not given), and not called "the Doctor". Cushing's character is an eccentric inventor who claims to have created TARDIS.

True. Doctor Who works fine on telly, putting it on the big screen would achieve nothing. Apart from the obvious inept casting decisions like Johnny Depp!

That'd qualify him for playing the TARDIS, wouldn't it?

I love Johnny Depp, but it's time for him to do a couple of straight roles to break up the eccentrics. He'd be a great Doctor, but I'd rather a Brit to be honest. And I think we can do a bit better than Eric Roberts as The Master this time, don't you?

I sometimes think these rumours are the execs testing the waters. If it's howled down on the message boards they have their market research.

For some reason I don't see this....... but if he will be the Doctor, I'd very much like him to convince me otherwise!

Where did you read that, Will?
