I find the 'based on a true story' ones a bit ghoulish for the most part, by their very nature the true to life ones often ignore the victims concentrating on an at times sensationalist study of the killer. They are very much a pornography of violence.
That's true in most of them-especially the tv movies! An exception is '10 rillington place' which gives a decent insight into the characters of some of the victims.

On UK TV, the best one for me has to be This Is Personal with Alan Armstrong, which is about the investigation into the Yorkshire Ripper murders. Told from the perspective of senior police officer George Oldfield (brilliantly played by Armstrong) this is an exceptional piece of TV.

Seconded, wholeheartedly. I managed to catch it when it was up on YT. No glossing over of the story, as you get with something like The Boston Strangler.

    You'll enjoy it GB.

Having said that about The Boston Strangler, Tony Curtis' performance wins me over.

Thanks Hugh, I'm looking forward to seeing this even more now that I have 2 recommendations.

Has anyone seen new Britflick Tony: London Serial Killer?

I've read a few review today and it seems like it may be a good watch despite it being under an hour long.

One that I forgot about is Cold Light of Day ....

    link: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0356476/

.... which is based on the crimes of Dennis Nilsen. It's a micro-budget film, but it suits the subject matter and is quite uncomfortable viewing at times. It concentrates of the psychological aspects of the case (from both killer and victim perspective) and is IMHO a remarkable film.

The three versions of the Durenmatt story 'The Pledge' are also worth checking out.
