Burt Lancaster deserved his Best Actor Oscar, and The Apartment the Best Film.

It was shameful that Jean Simmons was not even nominated for her performance in Elmer Gantry.

Taylor won the Best Actress Oscar for NOT dying in the London Clinic. Hollywood felt guilty for all the bad press that they had given her over the Debbie/Eddie/Liz fiasco.

    Cheers Ray.....

On the strength of this clip, I went and bought "The Virgin Spring" directed by Ingmar Bergman...and was greatly impressed...

I've not seen "The Apartment" but it looks interesting and have added it to my list.

I can certainly recommend The Apartment, not only for Jack and Shirley, but Fred MacMurray as well!

I wouldn't argue with West Side Story, Breakfast at Tiffany's and The Hustler getting the music and technical awards. George Chakiris as best supporting actor though? Should have been Montgomery Clift for Judgement at Nuremberg (superb film). Rita Moreno and Sophia Loren deserved their actress nods. Best actor should have been Paul Newman. Good to see La Dolce Vita in there as well. Not so sure about Splendor in the Grass, it's good but there were probably better contenders.

I don't want to say what it is because it would spoil it for anyone who has never seen the movie. It's very cool and delivered perfectly by Bob Mitchum who was Joe Cool long before Joe Cool was born.

    How true!

    Some of his quotes:

When asked what he looked for in a script before accepting a job, he said, "Days off."

"I kept the same suit for six years and the same dialogue. They just changed the title of the picture and the leading lady."

"People think I have an interesting walk. Hell, I'm just trying to hold my gut in."

"I gave up being serious about making pictures around the time I made a film with Greer Garson and she took a hundred and twenty-five takes to say no."

"I have two acting styles: with and without a horse."

(on his acting talents) "Listen. I got three expressions: looking left, looking right and looking straight ahead."

(on press stories) "They`re all true - booze, brawls, broads, all true. Make up some more if you want to."

"Years ago, I saved up a million dollars from acting, a lot of money in those days, and I spent it all on a horse farm in Tucson. Now when I go down there, I look at that place and I realize my whole acting career adds up to a million dollars worth of horse shit."

Great quotes Shirl, I liked them all but especially "I have two acting styles: with and without a horse." Of course he was being self-effacing but those quotes perfectly sum up his personality.

I never liked West Side Story. The idea of gangs in NYC dancing in the streets is ridiculous. I saw it on the stage in New York and it was a little better (just a little) without the real settings. But on the screen it doesn't work. Some of the songs are nice, but the basic idea is foolish. I know I am in a small minority here; it is supposed to be a classic.

Judgment at Nuremberg and The Guns of Navarone were both much better.

I have been wathing The Winds of War and War and Remembrance yet again, and Robert Mitchum is an anchor that holds the whole series together. There is no one like him now in film or television.

The beginning of Lawrence of Arabia is very effective, watching it while knowing what happens to Lawrence makes it very chilling.

Yes, To Kill a Mockingbird and Lawrence of Arabia are classics. The Longest Day is a very good film as well.

That video brings back vivid memories. I recall seeing Brothers Grimm in the late 60s at a Saturday matinee when it was reissued. The Music Man was shown at our local library during summer vacation at the same time.

That was also the year of the Brando Mutiny on the Bounty. I saw it again recently and I liked it much more than the first time years ago. It's still a strange film though.

Baby Jane is creepy indeed. I thought it was ghastly - really horrible stuff in every sense. But it was popular.

It always seems ridiculous when someone bursts into song and dance. Musicals aren't something you can take too seriously, Tim. You have to be able to accept them for their entertainment value, appreciate and enjoy the artistry and the creativity, with no concern for credibility. The music and the dancing in West Side Story is brilliant. It works beautifully on the screen! The entire production is a masterpiece.

I appreciate him much more now than I did when I was young. Funny how he always sold himself short; surely he must have been proud of his performances? Probably just an act in itself, I suppose.

BTW, I've been trying to remember the film in which he was supposed to say grace at the dinner table, and in his droll drawl came out with: Rub-a-dub-dub, thanks for the grub.
