Default Promising remakes

Reading about plans on another thread to remake Tinker Tailor had me wondering what help could be offered to the boneheaded, imagination-impoverished producers out there who fancy remaking a classic movie or TV programme. First thoughts were a remake of The Titfield Thunderbolt with Richard Briars in the Stanley Holloway role and Stephen Fry as the vicar. And just to demonstrate a complete lack of empathy with the original, the "thunderbolt" could be an old diesel unit. I'm sure there are many other suggestions out there?

In the case of TTT I would say it was one of those memorable movies that came about when a group of quirky talents got together and produced something rather special and one-off. You can make a different version of a novel but you can't really 'remake' a movie. Great films I think are accidents - a collision of talents and events and totally random. The Steve Martin syndrome (and that from a man who initially brought some quirkiness to Hollywood - very sad but no doubt profitable outcome from that) does seem to reign supreme at the moment. Martin is a good example because the first remake he got involved in wasn't too bad - Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, in fact an improvement on the original. Maybe thats the key - remake unexceptional, minor films but don't bother with anything clever, quirky or smart because it was a product of a certain group of talents colliding at a certain time and you can't replicate let alone improve on that.

I'd like to see a remake of 'High Tide at Noon', 'Nor the Moon by Night' and 'The Gypsy and the Gentleman'. Then the DVD release could include restored versions of the originals!!

There's two Max films that I would like to see remade .... The Dark Man would be a great vehicle for someone like Mark Strong, the other Daughter of Darkness which has a cracking role for a young actress. I think, for them to succeed, they would have to be made in their original period.

I saw the remake of The Heartbreak Kid yesterday and it was not a patch on the original.
