"The main star of the Movie, Edith Scob is still acting according to IMDB, just wish I knew what she looked like today!"

You don't really know what she looked like THEN, since she wears a mask!

Here she is, my avatar:

I ruined the opportunity of a "generation bonding" when I insisted on being taken out of Oz so I was grateful to read that Steve and Bats included this as one of the scariest films.

Probably, we all take some "baggage" along when we see a film, and particularly small children do. My baggage, when taken by my rather terrifying grandfather (aged 80) , to see Oz in 1945 (I was nearly 7 and in England for the first time from Africa), was a very real fear of haboobs (a Saharan African combination sandstorm /thunderstorm of incredible ferocity) which I had experienced in Khartoum, clutching to me, my white-haired Toto (a West Highland White named Susie), the two of us usually to be found, during these lengthy storms, under the stairs.

I was so undone by the tornado scene, the taken dog and the noise that I demanded to be removed immediately. Grandfather's assurances of the joys to come went unheeded and he was forced to take me out—well before the flying monkeys and only minutes into the film.

I suspect, even today, there might be children who would react as I did

Has anyone seen "Return to Oz"? That is one creepy little film. I remember one scene inparticular where Dorothy is in room with cabinet of decapitated heads, and she is trying to steal something and they wake up and start shrieking at her - it's as scary as anything you get in proper horror films.

I saw 'Return to Oz' when it first came out... but I remember virtually nothing of it... not exactly a very memorable little movie.

I think it is really good - one of best children's films of 1980's.

I remember watching " Legend of hell house" (about 1973 ?) and although I can't recall one particular scene of " terror " it had the threat of malevolence running right through the film. I haven't seen it since maybe worth tracking down to see if my memory serves me well

Oh well... I didn't think it was up to much... I do remember seeing it reviewed on 'Blue Peter' though.

Its available on DVD... it certainly is a classic (I have it in my collection). It certainly is more of an eerie piece rather than having any scene that gives a jolt to the system. However, I'd say the best Horror movies deal with suspence and atmosphere rather than the easy surprise jumps many modern movies take the lazy road with.

You're right Aaryk, it wasn't all that good.

Surely, there must be a scene in 'The Descent' that can qualify... If only a scene could be all the time in the caves
