Bats.
Clowns can be quite sinister and eerie, but the scariest thing of all is that whilst we know they freak us out, we are strangely attracted to that creepiness and keep watching.

I always 'liked' Ian Reddington's 'clown leader' in the DR WHO story 'The Greatest Show In The Galaxy' ; wonderfully creepy.

I suppose it's the concept of the masked menace - even though we can make out their basic features, they are still frighteningly unknown...

Michael Myers. Scarier as a child or as an adult?

Default Stop Clowning Around

In this kind of context, probably the dramatic contrast between the frivolous, comic appearance and the coldly murderous intent. In a strange way it's like how some toddlers are afraid of Santa, ostensibly a kindly (usually portly) chap with a white beard but terrifying to some ...

I saw House On Haunted Hill, the Vincent Price version, on its cinematic release. It was given an X classification and I was dead pleased to get in though only 13 at the time. In one of the cellar scenes an old lady suddenly appears out of nowhere and the entire audience including myself were levitated out of their seats with the shock of it. This was on one of the old huge single cinema screens too.

The Exorcism of Emily Rose unsettled me a little once, especially as I woke at 3am in the morning after watching it...

Some of the scenes of rotting cadavers in the cannibal’s larder in Death Line disturb me.

The first full frontal appearance of Norman Bates mother in Psycho!

I was Amy Turtles sex slave...

Another film that uneased me was The mothman prophecies where he see something in the mirror. Also what lies beneath when she looks into the bath and sees a girl, the changelling when she see the chair at the top of the stairs all these films made me jump.

'Thief of Bagdad', 'The King and I' and 'The Wizard of Oz' scarey, but 'Jaws' and 'Psycho' not.

Why are you doing this to me... I'm still not over your post in the Disappointing UK Film thread... and now you land this on me!!!

I'm going off to a corner to have a little cry now.

Meanwhile .... a scene I always found scary was the one in Counterfeit Traitor where the Nazis break a workers strike by randomly selecting a working man and hanging him. Another one was that 'execution/torture' montage at the start of Scarlet Empress.

I'm sure you'll find Lars Von Trier's original, 'The Kingdom' (Riget) parts I and II, worth the effort.

I remember from 'Blue Peter' (I think - lol It was many years ago) that 'Tik Tok' was not meant to be the Tin Man but an entirely different character

Looks like a very distant cousin of those two silly-looking robots in 'The Black Hole'.
The Tik Tok character was phsyically acted by a (Canadian?) Blue Peter presenter of the time, whose name I can't recall. Anyone? (I also don't recall who did Tik ok's voice over.) I do remember the fury in the UK tabloids when the actor/presenter was discovered to be gay, for which Blue Peter sacked him. He died shortly afterwards of AIDS. Always thought bad of the BBC for this. Also noted that he is never mentioned in any of Blue Peter's anniversary programmes.

That's what the IMDb is for

'Tik Tok' was performed by Michael Sundin and Timothy M. Rose and voiced by Sean Barrett.

Michael Sundin was the Blue Peter presenter.
