Where or how does one discover other fairly local movie buffs? There are clubs and societies of all shapes and sizes here but after 50 years in the same place I am yet to meet an audience of film buffs.
The children are long gone and I have the room (a whole top floor) and a long term yearning to construct a Home Cinema but it would be nice to get some tips and cheaper if I knew of fellow enthusiasts so that I could see and experience the hobbyist at work.
Any ideas or enthusiast publications available?

Didn't we go over this before Bernardo? You only need a portable screen (Boot Fair £2) Panasonic 200 Projector £800 or £200 second hand...DVD player £20 and an amplifier and speakers £50 (Richer Sounds).... and off you go.
I have been running 3 Film Clubs for over 15 years now...some nights I get 3 or 4 members...other times 20-25...you have to keep it going no matter what.

    Hello, Film Man,

Thanks for the information on the equipment. How large a screen can you use but still keep the image fairly crisp? and what kind of amplifier, also its cost?

Good for you in running the Film Clubs. Do you hold them one day a week in a hall you rent, or?

    Best,

    Barbara

Sort of, I built a media pc and network set up instead now turning my attention to the empty room but I would really like to see someone's efforts and as a separate issue meet/join a group of like minds so I can extend my hobby and knowledge base with some guidance.

Some time ago I had a bit of a chat going with a gentleman from Birmingham, who built a rather well known cinema in his back garden. He runs shows using a Bell & Howell 16mm set up. Perhaps you could contact him for advice. I found him to be really interesting to talk to. Take a look round this site and I'm sure you'll find him. I'll do likewise and see if I can locate him for you.

Go to the thread "CONFESSIONS OF A CINEMA EMPLOYEE" by CHRISB. Go to page 2, scroll down, and you'll see his home cinema "THE PALACE".
    Hope this helps you Bernardo.

You could also go to the website of the British Federation of Film Societies at BFFS: Home They have an interactive map of the UK which will show you where you nearest film society or community cinema is.

How do cinema clubs using DVD as a source fit in with the "public performance" restrictions?

Goodness...so many questions! You can get sharp pictures on a 15 foot screen Barbara. If it's a private Cinema Club restrictions go out the window! If it's a Film Society then red tape rules!

I can run 35mm 16mm and 8mm as well as all Digital Systems...I have a website just send a PM...and was featured in Classic Home Cineme magazine as well as BBC Morning News (blimey I sound like a real anorak)!

Get in the car Bernardo angd get down here...I might even be able to give you a film projector and films!

Everyone's heading to your Oast house!
I will be using the GS for a show to a local 'over 50's club' Wednesday afternoon.

Well done 'mal'...I don't use the GS 1200s much now for film shows...very useful for transfering 8mm to DVD. I found most Village Halls have terrible blackout facilities and with the sun shining through, it was hard to project a bright image. My Panasonic 200 gives a very bright digital image and even with Halls that don't have curtains I get a very good picture...if you ever get to my pad I will demonstrate just how good digital can be.

Hi Film man. Your mention of Village Halls took me back to the 1970's. I ran a Film Club, and booked the local village hall for an evening showing of "The Desperate Hours" (Humphrey Bogart) and we had a great piece of publicity, as the local newspaper ran a story about "Unusual" films being shown in the village hall. I had to get them to print that we were not showing what was called in those day "Blue" films, but classics from the forties and fifties. I have the press cutting to this day. Mind you, I recall it boosted applications to join!

    Hi Film Man,
I use digital projection too, my Panny 700 is nearly 5years old but it still delivers as well as ever.
My friend has the 200 model, it had that power supply problem discussed in Projections magazine but Panasonic repaired it for free even though the guarantee was up.
    regards,
    Mal
