What is the point of that? They are just using the character's name and are the owners of Christie's estate such whores that they would agree to that casting? Agatha must be doing somersaults in her grave.

Discussion on the matter during the later stages of the BBC Radio 4 "Today" programme yesterday morning, March 30.

Its trackable (somwhere) on the i-player, and it comes in at around 8.45 am.

Sounds like a reinvention along the lines of "Young Sherlock Holmes" which was quite an enjoyable film, or "The Young Indiana Jones". Its not exactly a unique idea, take an established older character and take them back to their youth to appeal to a younger audience.

That's not what they are doing. She is now American and set in the United States today. What has that have to do with Miss Marple?

It's sounds like casting set to appeal to a male hetrosexual 14-35-year-old audience, and to horrify the rest of us.

It has been attempted before ala Christie. Alfred Molina played a dashing, action man Poirot in an updated TV movie remake of Orient Express. IIRC they also gave him a sex drive. The filkm itself was dreadful and Poirot unrecognisable in the incarnation.

The holders of Christie's literary estate (I think there are several of them) are just trying wring every last penny they can out of properties which have been done to death. Understandable really and the Christie family can't complain as they sold the 'family silver'.

As long as it's as good as these adaptations, I won't be complaining...

You have to wait until the bit where Michael J.Fox comes along in his turbocharged Morris Minor....

I suppose it is too much to expect them to use the magnificent Ron Goodwin Marple music

That really is the most brilliant theme - perfect for a Swinging 60s groovy Little Old Lady detective. The man was a genius.

James Garner would be a better choice.

In the UK controversially it's been said that American actress Jennifer Garner is to play Agatha Christie's Miss. Marple in 21st Century America. I know many think Marple should be played as an ederly character (though even in make-up I don't think I'd call current Marple Julia McKenzie elderly), but I quite fancy seeing a young Jane Marple, but I'd prefer to stay loyal to the Christie character had have ideally a British actress in the role (though American actress Helen Hayes was a great Marple)and have the screenplay set in pre-First World War England.

I did her a suggestion yrs ago Jenny Agutter would be a good younger Miss. Marple, but I was just thinking Ab Fab actress Julia Sawalha would make a great 30 something Marple. She's already had acclaim for the period comedy drama Lark Rise To Candleford.

I remember Margaret Rutherford, as Marple, used to bragged about her sporting prowess in her youth, like being ladies fencing c hampion in 1912, which reminds me. Rosamund Pike had to learn to fence for the Bond film Die Another Day. maybe she could play Miss. Marple as an action heroine in WW1

I think that is a pretty good call - although Julia is 42.

Jenny is far too attractive to ever play Miss Marple who is supposed to be able to pass almost unnoticed.

In any case, if the Disney Disaster does go ahead, I shan't be making any effort to watch it According to the short interview on Today yesterday morning [still available on Listen Again at about 8.57], the Christie estate trustees hadn't made a decision yet.

Jennifer Garner is practically old enough to be a grandmother, so I say live and let live. If Brits can play Batman and Superman I don't see why Miss Marple needs to be British. I think Sandra Bullock would be better than Jennifer Garner though.
