Hi all,
I love film .... full stop. Being of NI origin - I tend toward English-speaking, multi-national content ... Europe being so close now (culturally, and geographically)
I have never quite enjoyed films made about Northern Ireland - only a few don't make me cringe when it comes to dialect, and content. How do you interpret someone else's experience of life in the Uk? (if you're an outsider?)
The one film I have enjoyed in the modern era (being mainly a 'black and white film fan eg Mildred Pierce' - starred Daniel Day Lewis (who I normally can't stand as an actor) but the story was at least 'based on fact'- however it was interpreted.
As a Belfast girl - I think I was always drawn to 'kitchen sink' dramas - as only 'the British' can do! After all, even Ikea sells a Belfast Sink!
Don't want to start a riot - but I love diversity. I think 'East is East' is a great film - fantastic script, wonderful actors. I just don't want to end up being 'one of those people I never thought I was' ... Eg Loving a stereotype. Imagining this was 'how it was' as depicted through film.
Please let me know your thoughts ...
I'll only be proud to be anything 'national' - if the film is right. So far, the Aussies do it for me. 'Muriels' Wedding' - topping the lot!
Cheers,
Colleen
I don't take the movies seriously, and anyone who does is in for a headache.
