PA News Cinema tickets can cost anything from £3.50 to more than £12 per adult, a new report has found. The facilities, cleanliness, comfort and ease of access to UK cinemas also varies greatly, according to Which? magazine. Refreshments on sale are often limited in range, unhealthy and expensive, a panel of the consumer group's members said. Food and drink sold at cinemas scored the lowest satisfaction rating of any aspect of the cinema experience, with just 7% of the 864 Which? respondents saying they were "very satisfied" with it. Around three in 10 people surveyed said sound and picture quality was the factor which most affected their enjoyment of a trip to the movies. Soundtracks turned up too loud, particularly during trailers and adverts, was a common complaint. London is the most expensive place for a cinema trip, with tickets at Odeon cinemas in the capital ranging from £8 to £12.50 for the flagship Leicester Square branch. The independent City Cinema in Newport was the cheapest cinema of those surveyed at £3.50 for an adult's peak time ticket. Cineplex and Strand cinemas in Belfast both charged £4.50 for adults' peak time tickets. "Our survey showed a clear preference for smaller independent cinemas over the big chains among many members, though some older-style independents we visited had poor facilities, particularly for people who are disabled," the Which? report says. |

I read an article a which said London was the most expensive capital city in Europe if you wanted to visit the cinema. I would vouch for that, a trip to the cinema here in central London leaves little change from £30, which is just ridiculous. I love going to the cinema but as a resident of central London my visits are few and far between. I generally just wait for the DVD release, its cheaper!

What annoys me as someone who has recently reached 60 is the fact that Odeons only have senior citizen prices up to 5pm where as the Vue chain have that available all day.

The Classic in Cosham near Portsmouth charges 3 pounds admission - however it closes on Wednesday 31st October 2007 after being opened since 1932 (opened by Jack Buchanan) and the last film it will show is CINEMA PARADISO - nice touch. Sad to see it go.

In this area we have the ''Hollywood' chain of 3 or 4 cinemas in different towns. Ticket price for adults is under a fiver. They also run special rate tickets for kids, OAPs, students and special Gold Cards which work a bit like a season ticket. You can use them at any time and on any day including weekends. In Norwich they have taken over the Odeon, which was state of the art when it opened in the 60s. It has been converted to a three screen cinema and all the screens are good sizes and the auditoriums very comfortable.
