I watched Star Trek last night and it was absolutely terrible. Worst reboot so far. Batman Begins was pretty lousy too but it was at least better than Geogre Clooney's effort. As for Casino Royale, I do not like this Americanised lone maverick routine they have imposed on Bond, but it was pretty solid overall. Star Trek really was awful though, but no surprise considering it was by the writer of Lost. They could have set it after Enterprise's original mission, but instead they chucked out 40 years of history. No "fan" wipes out 40 years of mythology, it just shows how much respect this new film's writers and director have for Star Trek's heritage. Only matter of time before they reboot Coronation Street.

Completely disagree. The new Star Trek was great, a breath of fresh air compared to the last few appalling films. It cheekily used the familiar sci-fi technique of alternate timelines to create a new future for the young crew. The original series/movies still exist but this can continue in its own way.

Its plot did not even make sense though, even by Star Trek standards. There are plenty of Class M planets around, just evacuate Romulans to one of them ergo problem solved; how is Romulus supposed to survive anyway once you have sucked its sun into black hole? Its tourism industry would be buggered for one, because you sure wouldn't spend your summer hols there.

I was disappointed in the Casino Royale reboot really - it wiped out a lot of back history and created a different character than the one(s) we'd seen before. Quantum of Solace became Bourne-lite and I thought that was a step too far.

Batman Begins and The Dark Knight have been successful reboots of a franchise that had started to get a bit too silly after a promising initial reboot in the 90s.

Batman Begins was IMHO a total bore ..... I didn't want all those scenes of him in the mountains, I wanted to see lots of crime fighting action in Gotham City. The Dark Knight was also IMHO a disappointment. It was more like a Brosnan 'Bond' film than a 'Batman' film.

Speaking of 'Bond', I enjoyed both of the Craig films and am really looking forward to the next one. They have hired a great director and some of the traditional 'Bond' elements will be returning so it should be worth the wait.

Star Trek I thoroughly enjoyed and it didn't bother me one bit that the plot was all over the place, it was hugely entertaining and the new cast did the characters proud.

Of course, you don't think that anyone would have a misleading user name do you?

Star Trek grabs you from the very start, it's what all action movies should be.
The whole Kirk being born, whilest his Dad dies saving him, is brilliant.
My missus was in tears and my children loved it, surely a sign of a well made movie
It was our favourite of the 2009 summer blockbusters.

I suppose it depends whether you think Star Trek movies should be action movies. I always liked how they aspired to be more than that; similarly with Bond, I always thought it was at its worst when it resorted to generic action formula (Tomorrow Never Dies/Die Another Day). I think something like The Undiscovered Country and Insurrection were superior Trek adventures, even though they passed cinema audiences by.

Undiscovered Country was great, Insurrection was very poor felt like an extended episode of the tv show.

I like every Star Trek movie...The difference with the new Star Trek movie is 'every one liked it (nearly)'
It put lots of bums on seats, this has to be a major plus for future Star Trek/Sci-Fi movies. As a family blockbuster it worked. If we want to watch something with deeper meaning we still have 'Moon' and 'Sunshine' etc.
My favourites are 'Star Trek - The Motion Picture' and 'First Contact' (Borg are best), this is just a personal choice, my Missus likes the one with the Whales (says a lot).

    thanks

I have never understand criticisms like that. Many episodes were very good, and I would take good TV episode over poor film any day. Basically Insurrection was back to basics Trek, doing kind of story that its TV equivalent would do, and I think most Star Trek fans would like to see them do more of that type of story in their film series.

I see what you mean but feel that a movie must do something bigger to warrant being on the big screen &,for better or worse, it must appeal to a broader audience than the niche tv fans.

Time travelling SF crews and superheroes can reboot almost endlessly. But Bond, I think, is a little different...

As much as I loved Casino Royale - and enjoyed QOS - there is a real problem with a franchise based on a single mortal hero from a particular historical time and place.

It isn't just that he can't ever realistically age. Bond is a WWII experienced Cold Warrior. The original films dropped the WWII connection (it was already too far back) but the film Bond is still a part of the Cold War era. And now he can't be. If he isn't that what is he? Can a War On Terror era Bond be the same Bond?

I think the jury is out. At the moment they are costing on pure style and avoiding the issue.
