It's a superb film, reminiscent at times of Joseph Heller's Catch-22. And where else can you see Joyce Grenfell share a scene with James Coburn?
Notice, for those who love the film (as I do): Arthur Hiller comments the film !!
I didn't know that, on the dvd's back, a certain Drew Casper (movie historian) is wrongly credited on commentary
Just listened to the beginning, A.H said this film is one of his preferences as said J.Andrews,J.Garner and J.Coburn ...
Notice II: Look,on the cover, James Coburn has the Flynt attitude![]()

Notice III: A.H also said that screenwriter Paddy Chayefsky (who was involved in J.Cromwell's The Goddesstoo) was the best he ever work with.... and that was just the first 10' of the commentary
!! Sounds good
for the rest of it !!
I've always thought Joyce Grenfell and Julie Andrews were perfectly cast as mother and daughter. They seem to me to resemble each other, a combination of brisk common sense and delicate warmth. They both knew how to deliver a comedy lines as well!
Makes great use of footage of the old (now gone) MGM Studio at Elstree as an American army base.
Adding that the shots and scenes of the débarquement are very well done, like in some "real" war film![]()
