    I don't think physical appearance is that important personally; nailing the character is what counts and for that reason Peter Cushing will always be a better Holmes than Basil Rathbone IMO.

    Those waiting for the return of the BBC series may have a bit of a wait as I think it's being held back, so as not to clash with the second Robert Downey Jnr film (due out at Christmas).

    A very interesting Documentary about Dr Joseph Bell (the inspiration for Arthur Conan Doyle's famous Detective Sherlock Holmes).

    I think Larry Hagman played SH in a modern day setting for U.S. TV. Sherlock Holmes was depicted in the film "Murder By Death" but the scenes were deleted. According to Patrick Robinson's "Guinness Book of Movie Facts and Feats" he can be glimpsed in some scenes, he also names the actor that played him but i forget at the moment.
    In "Dave Allen at Large" there was a recurring sketch in the series with Allen playing Holmes to Michael Sharvell-Martin's Watson. Approximate dialogue ;
    HOLMES -"Watson , if this poison is not sucked from your behind in 15 seconds your going to die"
    WATSON - "What's going to happen Holmes?"
    HOLMES - " Your going to die Watson, your going to die"

    I have the Larry Hagman effort - not very good. He's basically JR again.

    Didn't Mollie Hardwick write one of the Upstairs, Downstairs novelizations? I assume it is the same person.

    Basil Rathbone, Jeremy Brett, Benedict Cumberbatch, Robert Downey Jr, Tom Baker... the full list of actors who have taken on the role of Sherlock Holmes is so long that the super sleuth himself might struggle to remember all the names.

    And now, Holmes has broken the record for having more film and TV portrayals than any other literary character.

    The consulting detective has been depicted on the big and small screen a total of 254 times.

    Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's creation beats the next most popular character, Hamlet, by a total of 48 appearances.

    I would have thought Dracula has made more screen appearances than Sherlock. IMDB (not the final arbiter I know) seems to think so too with 275 credited appearances for the Count and 258 for Holmes.

    Guinness World Records, which awarded Holmes the record, called him a ‘literary institution’.

    My parents saw John Wood as Holmes in New York - it must have been in the mid 70s. They didn't care for the play as I recall, but said he was excellent.
