Sorry if this subject has been aired before, but I have never spotted the thread if so.

John Landis, Director of An American Werewolf in London, was on BBC Breakfast this morning talking about the scariest films ever made. Viewers then put forward their choices.

My Wife tels me she didn't sleep properly for 6 months after seeing The Exorcist. For me, In Cold Blood was absolutely chilling and by far the most disturbing and scariest film I have ever seen, by a long way. It was shown on TV about 9 months ago, I recorded it, but couldn't bring myself to watch it again and deleted it!! Still sends a chill up my spine thinking about it.

I wonder what films other members put in this category.

i am big horror fan and some of the best are:

    Texas Chainsaw Massacre
    Exorcist
    Shining
    Switchblade Romance (Haute Tension)
    Ringu (The Ring)
    Ils (Them)
    Psycho
    Memories of Murder (Korean)
    Nosferatu (groundbreaking)
    Just Before Dawn
    Halloween
    Don't Look Now

then for real disgusting real life horror

    Snuff 102
    August Underground

but those 2 should be banned from human eyes as they are horrific rather than scary

Quint's sudden appearance at the window and the hazy ghost of Miss Jessel makes The Innocents (1961) pretty high up in the scare rating for me. The Haunting (1963 version) is not one to watch alone in a darkened room either.

Halloween, Ringu and The Haunting are all pretty scary ..... as are Dead of Night, The Seventh Victim and Les Diaboliques.

Probably this wonderfully reassuring public information warning film, "Protect And Survive" about what to do in the event of nuclear fallout...

It's life Jim, but not as we know it!
I remember the series well, but I hadn't seen this episode - love the Leonard Cohen punchline at the end!

Fallout room and inner refuge? Did Mr. Allen provide these in a standard spec for Barratt Homes then?

    Threads

Both as a reminder of the realities of nuclear war - and as a film in itself. Simply, coldly, terrifying.

If I could like this post more than once I would. Have never been so scared watching TV. Looked so real.

Indeed. I've only seen it once and the dread still lives with me.

I have to make a distinction between horror as entertainment (Plague of the Zombies; The Exorcist; Texas Chainsaw Massacre...) and horror as a technique in something altogether more serious, such as Threads (or W Owen's poetry, for that matter).

There is no sense in which I enjoyed the horror in Threads.

I've never seen this, but the thought of it terrifies me.

My Little Pony: The Movie (1986) - IMDb

It is more depressing than scary.

It makes you want to eat your own children...

I'm A huge Horror fan myself, I don't think much scares me though now-a-days after all the Horror films I've seen. I'm more (for want of a better word) thrilled by them. I do quite like Argento's work, Suspiria being a particular favourite.

Ringu (The Ring). The only film ever to give me nightmares.

The American remake was a deathly pale imitation.
