    Not all special effects are done by CGI, even nowadays.

    In Scorsese's Hugo, the automaton draws the famous "rocket in the eye of the man in the moon" image from Le voyage dans la lune (1902) by Georges Méliès.

    But it isn't CGI, the automaton really draws it!

    The automaton was made by Dick George Creatives of East Molesley, Surrey, with help from students at Wimbledon School of Art. Play the video on their site
