One of the things that has often come up in conversations about films that I love has been the phrase "Ah, if only I could live there".

I've never been able to come up with a definitive answer to this; I do have a love for the era during which the Napoleonic Wars were fought across Europe and The Duellists is one of my favourite films for a fantasy location in and time period in which to live.

    My question is threefold:

    1. With which locations/time periods in film have you fallen in love?
    2. What role would you fondly imagine yourself filling?
    and
    3. In practical terms, given the location and time period, how do you think you would have fit in there (assuming, of course, that you have no fore-knowledge of history brought over from the current day)?

In the case of 'The Duellists', while I'd like to imagine myself (like Keith Carradine) as a rising star of the Napoleonic officer class with a beautiful estate in the French countryside awaiting me, it is fairly likely that I'd have been no more than a British conscript traipsing through the battlefields of Europe with an early death from septicaemia my likely fate.

Fagins Den! No doubt I`d be the one who had to cook the sausages and fill the Gin mugs!

Failing that, Sherlock Holmes` pad on Baker Street would be lovely, but I would definately get rid of those hideous black patterned curtains that hang when Brett is in residence!

Doctor Reeves' house from A Matter of Life and Death.
A room full of books, a housekeeper, a gardener, a camera obscura - and Kim Hunter coming to visit
