The reel thing: 10 top pop concerts captured on film
by Thomas H. Green
For one night only (03/02/2012), cinemas will be showing DON'T THINK, the new film by dance duo the Chemical Brothers, recorded at their 2011 Fuji Rock show. Usually a couple of songs of concert footage can be vividly exciting but retaining audience interest for a whole feature film is a harder call. The spectacular DON'T THINK manages it, but, while concert films and DVDs appear all the time, only a few are essential viewing.
Here are 10 that are always worth watching:
JAZZ ON A SUMMER'S DAY (1958)
THE BEATLES AT SHEA STADIUM (1965)
MONTEREY POP (1967)
PINK FLOYD: LIVE AT POMPEII (1971)
WATTSTAX (1972)
GEORGE CLINTON: THE MOTHERSHIP CONNECTION (1976)
STOP MAKING SENSE (1983)
ROY ORBISON AND FRIENDS: A BLACK AND WHITE NIGHT (1987)
NIRVANA: MTV UNPLUGGED IN NEW YORK (1993)
DON'T THINK (2011)

Festival Express.
BB King Live On The Tube (I would love a copy if anyone can oblige).
Shirley Bassey at the BBC Electric proms.
MAN live at the Marquee.
Monterey Pop.
Woodstock.
Message To Love - The Isle Of Wight 1971.
Cyndi Lauper Live In Paris.
David Gilmour - Live At Gdansk.
Pink Floyd at Pompeii.
Camel - Pressure Points.
Deep Purple - California Jam is my favourite single artist concert.
A concert for George (Harrison) has to be my favorite. No one can deny Joe Brown`s tribute at the end is both moving and memorable![]()
No Elvis!!
Also Joe Cocker & "Mad Dogs & Englishmen"!
& those soul revues from the 60's with Otis Redding, Arthur Conley, Sam & Dave, Booker T & The MGs etc!!
Elvis That's The Way It Is should be in there somewhere.
The Song Remains the Same by Led Zeppelin used to be my fave.
Rory Gallagher Irish Tour 1974...
Bangladesh. What a great line-up that was.
Blimey Jim, how could I have forgotten to include this majestic concert?
This opening track "Walk On Hot Coals" and the sublime "A Million Miles Away" alone are as good as any guitar led music you will see anywhere else from any era.
First thing I did after watching the DVD a few years back was to buy the CD version.
Gallagher's dedication to performing and his shyness away from the stage are a breath of fresh air against the age of excessive "showmanship" that we see in much of today's music.
It's no wonder that when Jimi Hendrix was asked "What's it like being the best guitarist in the world?" he allegedly said "I don't know - you'll have to ask Rory Gallagher"!
Enough said.
The Last Waltz takes a lot of beating (IMO)
Steve
Who's beating it? And why?
Nick
Best live band I've seen. World on Fire is superb.
Jonathan Demme's "Stop Making Sense" is by far the best I've ever watched. Nice to see it make the list.
A couple clips from Woodstock....
The two best clips (along with Santana's "Soul Sacrifice") from the movie, Sarge.
The producers wisely used the studio versions of these great tracks (and also for another great CS&N montage on "Woodden Ships") rather than the comparatively lifeless live versions from Woodstock, ironically enough.
Peter Gabriel...Secret World, Live 1994........Which Includes a Great Stage Exit.......
Cheers Edward....yes that Santana track is ace....
It was some years before I realised Melanie also performed at Woodstock because she doesn't appear in the film and is not included on the original triple LP.....
I don't remember seeing her either on the director's cut of Woodstock (which included Janis for the first time)....but Melanie eventually made it onto the second Woodstock LP "Woodstock 2".....
She sings "Beautiful People" & "Birthday of the Sun"......both songs by her I have on some treasured old vinyl....
Cheers
