Im no prude but why did films like Carry Ons and 007 movies which featured 15 certificate levels of heavy sexual suggestion and near nudity escape with a unsuitable PG certificate?- was there a "cosy arrangement" between censors and producers?

They were just clever at pushing things to the limit and presumably the BBFC were full of humourless antiquities who didn't get the innuendo. The 'bluetits' joke in Carry on Nurse (I think it was) got under the radar over here but in the states created a national sensation. The BBFC could get easily distracted as when a lady on the board thought she saw a pubic hair in one the early Bonds and had to see the clip 200 times before being convinced otherwise.

Isn't there some real nudity in Moonraker too? I recall one of them had to be trimmed after being threatened with 18 certificate, one of Dalton's I think. It has often puzzled me why recent ones were 12 when they were not any more violent or explicit than Connery's or Moore's.

Hammer's original Dracula was recently rereleased certificate '12'. I believe Carry On Abroad was originally released as either certificate 'AA' or 'X', depending on where in the U.K. you saw it. The last time I know of a local Council banning a film in their borough was Westminster and the film Crash in 1996. Has anything similar happened since?

Southern Ireland and Northern Ireland still have different ratings, films here in Northern Ireland could be a 12A or 15 where it could be a 18 in southern Ireland they are far more strict down south with their film ratings, Confusing really.

Carry On Sergeant had a U certificate.Eventually the series graduated to A certificates such as Carry On Abroad and finally with the lamentable Carry On Emanuelle to AA.This information is available from the informative BBFC WEBSITE.
given the fact that many of these films have been shown on weekend afternoons to give them a 15 certificate would be pointless and rather questionable.

I remember my first X rated movie when I was 17, A Clockwork Orange. At that time I could not see the fuss about it all until much later in life.
My second X rated movie also at 17, was Death Line and having recently joined the Underground and seeing the 3 car unit out of the depot everyday, I just had to see it and loved it and even today get the same thrill of watching it. Brings back lots of great memories. ________________ Hooked off the line |
