Default The Most Watched Movie Ever

Found this on the BBC web site today:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/magazin...ine/3076809.stm

The most watched movie ever is Jesus The Movie with an estimated world-wide audience of 2 billion & counting...and with a British actor in the title role...

You've been had ploynikes, or you are trying to have us.

Firstly, that link doesn't work, and secondly there is no such film as "Jesus the Movie". Or did you mean "Jetsons: The Movie"?

The film is actually called THE LIFE OF JESUS or The Jesus Film. Made by Christian Cinema it has been shipped out to churches and Sunday schools and homes all over the world on all formats; 35mm, 16mm VHS, DVD etc and is frequently advertised on satellite TV.
The makers claim it has been seen by 4.7 billion people in 200 countries and translated into 800 languages

Hmmm...propaganda methinks. 4.7 billion is the population of the planet, and I for one haven't seen it.
In terms of bums on seats, you will still have to go some to beat Birth of a Nation. They lost count.

Au contraire - this is the film in question.

I've never seen it, but I've been well aware of its existence because it's a good case study in unconventional distribution and marketing - it flopped on its brief conventional theatrical run, but has amassed staggering profits in secondary markets (mostly church-related). Amusingly enough, one of the closest comparisons I can think of is Deep Throat, another film that's been cited as potentially amongst the biggest grossers of all time, but where the evidence is largely anecdotal.

That said, the gobsmacking success of The Passion of the Christ suggests that Jesus probably has built up some fairly colossal audiences - 4.7 billion is clearly a ridiculous exaggeration (though the Earth's population is actually 6 billion), but it's not at all hard to believe that it might have penetrated markets that Hollywood has yet to conquer, just as Mel Gibson's film did.

I think one of the film's directors, John Krish, started out working with Humphrey Jennings or something like that.

Certainly one of our best documentary makers, I believe the NFT ran a short season on him just this last year. A bit out of his normal stamping ground...

I was even more surprised by the normal careers of the producers, making well known British horror films etc.
