Well, since we're being frivollous, I once had a very, very early edition of the book, which starts, not with the creepy description of the drive, but with Maxim and Whatserface sitting on a terrace somewhere in a warm country long after the event. He takes a great interest in the public school batting averages, so I think we have to assume that they have at least one son and that things went a bit better for them. Did anyone notice in the film, by the way, that the so-English Mrs dW2, on getting her scrambled eggs in Monte Carlo, transfers her fork to the right hand and shovels it down American-style?
