I didn't know Quinn won awards for Streetcar Named Desire. Interesting.

I can see why Quinn was popular; I just don't enjoy that type of over-the-top actor. But of course most people disagreed withe me! He had enough intensity for ten men, and had great presence. People like that are sometimes better on stage. On screen, he was far too much. Rod Steiger was like that as well - but Steiger could disappear into a character, unlike Quinn. (Although he didn't in Waterloo. He was never Napoleon - he remained Steiger.)

Quinn needed a strong director to control his acting IMHO. His later career suffered frim weak movies with weak directors.

Terrific films - but only Lawrence in this list is an epic. It is my favourite Epic Lean - although I prefer Bridge on the River Kwai (not really an epic - but pretty stonking!)

For really dull epics... 2001 A Space Oddessy - apart from the HAL sequence - is pretty bleeding ponderous.

I know that LOA is the only 'epic', I was simply listing my favourite Lean films.
If you think 2001 is bad, you'd better give 2010 a miss.

On the subject of Kubrick, I found A Clockwork Orange to be boring.

For me it was the Peter O'Toole film "Lord Jim". I went to see it in the 60s because I am a bit of a James Mason fan. I believe I left before the end something I never usually do!

Performance - Starts well, and then the drugs obviously got to cast, crew and everybody else involved.

Brief Encounter - Not brief enough. Just can't stand those awful upper middle class accents.

I am most awfully sorry old boy. I just don't know what came over me. I will retire to the drawing room and play the piano until I feel better.

( Old Trev should have just shafted her behind railway buffet and 'ad it away on 'is toes. )

I may be treading on hallowed turf here, but Death In Venice takes the McVitie for me, closely followed by The Matrix - fell asleep in the cinema during that sequence in the kitchen and never saw the rest of it!

Default Oh I say

Interesting, Mr Pendrey.
This would no doubt be the kind of plot should the movie be remade in our era. No doubt a corny poster tag like "A Steamy affair" would tie in to the train motif.
They could even re-title it "Briefs Encounter"...
Regards,
Edward G (String).
