My beef is that French films often do not have subtitles at all. And sometimes one can't buy a movie and find out first whether it has subtitles or not. I suspect this is because the only foreign market is the US, where they seem to like their French movies dubbed (ugh). I have been trying to find out for ages whether the DVD of "Un elephant ca trompe enormement" (aka "Pardon Mon Affaire") has subtitles or not. I have tried asking on the Amazon forums, I have tried e-mailing the DVD company, all to no avail. I know this is not a British movie, but please, if anyone here knows the answer...

French dvds of films in the English language more often than not have burnt in French subtitles.

The Powell & Pressburger films from l'Institut Lumière are all "language friendly"

The films themselves have soundtracks in their original language. So that's mainly in English with odd bits of other languages where appropriate to the story. They all have optional French subtitles.

All of the many extras are either in English with optional French subtitles or are in French with optional English subtitles.

To quote Mr Punch, "That's the way to do it"

Yeah, I'm empathise with that. I've been trying for ages to get a copy of WEEKEND AT DUNKIRK with English subtitles - it had worldwide distribution in the 60's. No chance. The French retailers have been quite haughty about my enquiries too.

I think the Monty Python team nailed the French attitude to the English in HOLY GRAIL: "You Eenglish . . .I fart in your general direction . . .!"
