Steve is correct. Having worked in both photography and music, film and analogue give you a wider range and good film is still superior to anything digital can produce. Digital is good for editing and clean sound, but has digital boundaries, which can delimit certain elements of atmosphere in sound.

Thanks for the job recommendation, Gibbie. Can't you just tell I used to be a civil servant?

It even took me a while to reconcile myself to the fact we miss a bit of picture when a 1.37:1 film is shown on a 1.33:1 TV screen. I mean - that's 3% of the picture missing. (Just kidding - honest!)

It's that kind of editing knowledge that is needed to make the standards right!

Has anybody else seem the press release from the new ITV Network (Granada/Carlton) ? Last week they announced their intention to bring forward a new digital channel : ITV 3.

"ITV tunes in to channel 3

ITV today announced plans to create a new channel and double spending on programmes for its ITV2 station.

The television firm - created from the merger of Granada and Carlton - will target additional sports rights, American shows and movies on ITV2, as well as support the launch of a new ITV3 service later this year.
The strategy is part of an extra £36 million a year multi-channel investment ITV hopes will generate £150m of revenues by 2007.

The broadcaster, which also has the ITV News Channel, said [/b]it was on course to launch ITV3 in the final three months of this year. The service will target viewers aged over 35 with ITV dramas and movies. [/b]"

Whether or not this means that they will now exploit their film libray holdings remains to be seen...

If only SAGA would do for tv what they're trying to do for radio, eh ? wink

A nice idea but I suspect if ITV were to open up the Carlton/Granada vaults they'd do so with a dedicated ppv channel. Had they put Carlton Cinema on Sky's network the increased revenue might have made it a runner.

I've seen ITV3 dubbed ITV Gold; so maybe lots of old Corrie, Morse and The Bill.

For what there is on television during the day, they may as well save money by putting old films on. All there is now are variants of antiques programmes, make over programmes, swapping homes etc...I tend to avoid television during the day.
Both BBC and ITV could have their own "golden television and films" slots for a couple of hours on the afternoons.

I would like TCM to show some films it hasn't shown several hundred times already.

BBC & ITV are supposed to produce new, exciting, thought-provoking television shows. (Pause for laughter.)

Showing more old films does not fit their brief. Even if it did, I'm sure they would rapidly get into a "TCM mode" of showing the same films over and over.

Has anyone noticed there are more add breaks on TCM now? violent only if you watch or tape something in the wee small hours do they seem not to interupt the film, but there's no consistency
cheers Ollie

They probably need cash, so more adverts.

Yes, the early days of TCM used to be great - not an advert in sight. The ad bumpers they use now are lousy too. As for inconsistency, sometimes they cut on a fade, then they don't.

But worst of all at the moment has to be CH4 ; not only do we get squeezed credits and voice-overs (usually BOTH advertising the following show) but also those bloody awful animated ad bumpers. duh

FIVE seems to do a lot of pre-bumper/post-bumpers fades to black, which is good. But something lurking in the back of my tiny little brain makes me suspect that to do that, they've probably done a fair bit or trimming... shocked2

The problem in entertainment has always been the money men who put cash over art or atmosphere. This is particularly a problem in TV and music industry, where many decision makers have very little understanding of film or music.

It might be a good idea to petition Carlton, TCM for particular programing. If they know that you are a subscriber they may listen, if there are enough responses. But, if you do that sort of thing, you must go to the top - the decision makers or else...
