Default The Colour Red

I do not know whether this can be answered but we have:
The Red Shoes
The Wizard of Oz (Dorothy's red shoes)
The Lady in Red (Gene Wilder)
Don't Look Now ( the red mac)
Schindler's List (the girl in the red coat)

Are there any more and if so what is the significance of the colour red.

regards
Freddy

Red can mean many things to many different people :)

Generally it is used to mean passion or sex. Look at any of Powell's Technicolor films. But it is also symbolic of blood. It represents good luck in Chinese tradition, that's why Chinese brides often wear red.

In the Wizard of Oz they take great pains to call them Ruby Slippers, not red. There they are an emblem of power.

In Schindler's List, it's more the fact that the girl is in colour when everything else is in B&W. It's the event that triggers his awakening to what's going around him.

Cheers Steve,

As you say it is a passionate colour and yet in Don't Look Now and Schindler's List they are both symbols of a horror to come.
Watching Spooks on Monday night one scene was with one of the backroom spies alone in her house watching The Red Shoes.

Wasn't it more a symbol of Schindler's awakening/realisation than the horror? That was shown quite well in B&W.

One of the email group pointed out about Spooks thanks (we have spies everywhere) but they haven't said if there was any particular significance in them watching The Red Shoes. Did you identify any?

The scene was that she was lonely and weepy and yearning for a chap under her surveillance, who liked Mozart and was a PHD in Economics. On TV she is watching Red Shoes,I think it was her own copy, when Moira dances in the shoes our spy starts to sniffle into her hankie as only women can.
bawling
The is a knock at the door and in comes her colleague with the info on 'Giles' (It was at this point that I thought she's a spy and she leaves her door on the latch and just shouts 'come in')

Thats it then Steve, she 'bumps' into the chap, they spend the evening singing Mozart's requiem at St. Martins in the Field which was cleverly intercut with two other agents having to cold bloodedly kill a sinister figure on a North Sea ferry.

Sadly they do not click and they go their separate ways.

best wishes
Freddy

You've never been in the audience when I'm watching A Matter of Life and Death. Despite the many times I've seen it and the amount I know about it, it always makes me cry in at least two or three places.

It looks like TRS didn't have any particular significance in Spooks, although it's unusual to cry at the start of the main ballet. It might have some meaning that wasn't directly referred to in that episode or it might just be her favourite film. That's probably why our chap hasn't said any more about it.

Thanks

Steve

Have just watched Morecambe and Wise in the worst film ever! I've always liked M&W but this film was rubbish! 'Murder on the something or other'.

They really should not have bothered!

Not sure what M&W have to do with this thread, but the film you've put yourself through is the notorious Night Train to Murder.

When Eric & Ernie moved from the BBC to ITV (Thames), one of the attractions of the deal was that they would work on a feature film, as they still wanted to revive their movie careers.

Far from the decently budgeted production the boys envisaged, the film eventually dribbled out as a low-budget TV movie, which was universally panned and a big disappointment to M&W.

And no, I certainly don't want a copy, but thanks for the offer!

Also - going slightly off the thread - that being Britmovies - what about the colour red in The Sixth Sense? Sorry if you haven't seen this - look away now! - but there are quite a few scenes where the colour red features and after seeing the directors comments on the making of the film he says that he used red to indicate clues as to when Bruce Willis's character was in a scene or there was a significant scene involving ghosts and such like. It was a very clever touch. I thought one of the best red-scenes was the "grieving" mother at the daughter's funeral! Sorry chaps, I know this wasn't a Britmovie but couldn't resist. There's loads of red clues in this film. Of course, obvious to me after I had seen it!!
Love and best wishes

I've seen sixth sense threee times and hadn't noticed that so cheers Dolly. A good film, must be when with an ending so crucial you still want to watch it again.

Spooks & Sixth Sense

Think nothing of it, old chap - one doesn't want to be known as some sort of thread fascist! Nice to get another bit of arcane knowledge off my chest.

The three movies they made in the 60s were'nt much cop so I dread to think how awful that must be.
