Kathleen Byron as Sister Ruth in Black Narcissus.
![]() When he offered her the role, Powell warned her that she'd never get another role as good as that, and she didn't. She was only ever offered "mad nun" type of roles for some years afterwards but she turned them down. But some people remembered her and she got to play Mrs Ryan in Saving Private Ryan Steve |

Why films? How about tv as well?
Klaus Kinski in Venom, superb. The Hood in Thunderbirds. Witchiepoo in HR Pufnstuff, frightens the heck out of my boys. Harry Andrews as R.S.M. Bert Wilson in The Hill, reminds me of an old boss of mine who was a RSM and lived the life beyond the regiment. God bless you Sam. He asked me once if I was in his regiment what I would like to do. My answer "Shoot You". It was the only time I ever seen him smile. And I truly looked up to this man and have never and will never forget him. Albert Steptoe for the way he treated his own son. Brilliantly written and portrayed by Wilfred Brambell, showed a very darkside to the character and to the way he looked at his son, which over the years became a battle of wits which he always won. _______________ Hooked off the line |

Not a film .... but in this week's Waking the Dead there was an incredible performance from David Schofield as a male rapist/killer. He was really chilling in the role.

When they got home the children seemed to be a bit upset so Dad told them "But you know Uncle Bobby, and you know how nice he really is. He was just pretending." But the children were still a bit upset so he phoned Bobby and asked him to speak to the children and reassure them. The children picked up the phone and when he was sure they were both listening Bobby went into his child-catcher routine. "Come along, kiddie-winkies! I've got lollipops!" and then he added "I'm the child-catcher and I'm coming to get you!" The children ran upstairs to their bedroom, screaming but thoroughly delighted (if a bit traumatised) because they'd got their own child-catcher ![]() Children do like to be scared - in a way that they know is really safe Steve |

My two favourites are Lee Van Cleef and Leo Gordon. As a child I went to see every Western film I could just in case Lee or Leo appeared however briefly before being despatched by the hero. Leo as a brutal convict in 'Riot in Cell Block 11' and as the killer who shot a small boy's dog because it barked at him in 'The man with the gun' stand out as memorable movie performances. Lee Van Cleef became a big star in Spaghetti Westerns of course, but I prefer seeing him in films such as 'High Noon', 'The Man who shot Liberty Valance' and 'The Bravados.'

Leo Gordon was one of the top character actors in the 40s/50s .... always a pleasure to see his face onscreen, especially in westerns.
Leo gets his just desserts .... ![]()
