Default NIght of The Hunter

I only discovered that the wonderful Night of the Hunter with Robert Mitchum and Shelley Winters was directed by Charles Laughton, I really have to read more one of my favourite old films and never realized it was him directing.

Sadly it was the only film Laughton directed. It was not particulalrly well received when it was released and Laughton evidently took the response (or lack of it) quite badly. We can only wonder whatever great films he might have directed had it got its due when released.

I thought it was a disturbing and very interesting film too, how sad for Charles

I would strongly recommend Simon Callow's Laughton biography "A Difficult Actot" to all. Alec Guiness said it was "One of the best theatre books ever".

I'd agree with that.

And me. This gives me an excuse to quote Callow on Laughton's Quasimodo:-
"It is absurd to speak of Laughton's Quasimodo as a great performance, as if that were some quantifiable assessment. It is acting at its greatest; it is Laughton at his greatest; it is a cornerstone of this century's dramatic achievement; it is a yardstick for all acting. "
Just love that quote.

That's why Simon Callow regularly appears in the "Luvvies" section in Private Eye. That's where they record all the silly things actors say about each other and about their work, like how difficult it is to stand still for 5 minutes or to walk & talk at the same time

Not all actors take themselves that seriously. Ignore the shark film trailer and enjoy this .....

I know they don't all do it, that's why it's such fun to laugh at the ones that do

The trailer for the actual interview looks great, I'll watch it later

Simon Callow did his one man show 'Dickens' at a local theatre a few years ago .... he held court in the bar afterwards and he was priceless. A nice man but what an AK-TOR!

The Brando interview is great .... the guy is so funny and off the wall, brilliant.
