IN almost every old film, when on the phone they look at it when the person goes way, or what about when the girl runs after the man in the apartment, and hes just slammed the door, she hangs on to the handle, and cuddles the door without opeining it, now if you really wanted to catch someone wouldnt it be easier to open the door instead of cuddling it. always happens.

Also when people get cut off they hit the telephone cradle a couple of times and go "Hello.... hello" when in fact hitting the cradle for longer than a second would cut you off anyway.

In 'Going Byebye'
What about when Stan takes a call for Ollie with a can of milk in his hand. Ollie takes the mouthpiece, but Stan accidentally gives him the can rather than the receiver. Hardy then inclines the can to his ear and gets an earful of white stuff. He politely tells the caller......'excuse me a moment madam, I've just got some milk in my ear'..........

Yes, back in the days when there were operators.
But some people still do it even now. Either because they're older people and it used to work to get back to the operator, or because they've seen people do it in films and think it'll work in real life ![]() Steve |

![]() As for looking at the phone after an awkward call, you've got to look somewhere and I expect people do look at the phone in real life while they're pondering the meaning or the effects of the call ![]() Steve |

When we first got a phone in the seventies I tried that, because I'd seen so many people on films and TV do it. Funnily enough, it didn't work...

Yeah, a great scene, Scholes.
Comic class that Eddie Murphy and Steve Martin can only dream about..... Quote:

Timeless humour way ahead of it's time. My personal favourite is where Ollie decides to elope with Dulcie, and Stan brings along the smallest car possible. Just too many hilarious sketches to mention, and I never tire of laughing at them.

Agree, there are many of the shorts that more than stand the test of time. I also never tire of "Busy Bodies" or "The Chimp". Even the music fits the action like a glove...

Maybe it means they don't really want to chase after the man, or are at least in two minds about it. Quote:
![]() It's because they do many takes until they get it right. It's probably the same with pulling the paper out. It's more dramatic if you don't use the paper release lever because you then get the noise from the rollers. Steve |
