It has to be Patrick McGoohan as previously stated. He has that certain charisma, that a 007 needs.
Just watch him in The Prisoner,he was in almost every scene.
Superb Actor

Bond was Scottish .... Fleming included details of Bond's family history in the books in honour of Connery.

A Yank as Bond .... not for me. There has also been talk in some quarters that Bond should be played by a black actor. I think actors should be cast for their suitability to a role and while some ethnicity changes do work, Bond is such an icon, and his physical characteristics so well defined, that to cast a black actor wouldn't be true to the character. It would be like casting George Clooney to play Shaft. He's sexy and he's 'cool', but he ain't Shaft.

Olivier Martinez just isn't 'Bond' enough, and Errol didn't look as ropey as some pictures suggest. This one was taken shortly before his death in 1959 ...

Daniel Craig just doesn't cut it as Bond for me. Nothing behind the eyes to convey any emotions or sardonic humour. Once was more than enough and I won't be interested in seeing him in the role again.

Wasn't John Richardson considered at the same time as Lazenby?

He was a good looking actor (if a bit wooden)!!

I am afraid I have to disagree with you re Craig. I thought his performance was stunning. He perfectly captured the vulnerability of the charcter (mixed in with ruthlessness) that has been missing since Lazenby. Craig's Bond is capablle of killing you, but also of making a real pig's ear of it in the process. Much as I love Bond films .... some of them portray him as a kind of superman.
I think Craig will get better and better.
