Alan wasn't replaced, Richard Beckinsale, who played Alan died at a very young age. He would have gone on to be a great comedic actor and is probably looking down on his daughter Kate and her excellent career.

Good point. Those iconic theme tunes are really missed in the Callan and Sweeney movies.

The Sweeney films were made by the same company that made the TV programs "Euston Films" with all the same crew, producers and writers etc .Tony Hatch composed the music for Sweeney 2. I bet they could have used the original TV music if they had wanted to but would have had to pay more money to the original composer for the rights, I agree that the TV music is best but maybe they just wanted something different to give audiences a new experience when viewing the film at the cinema.

I do love the music in the Callan movie though! Often whistle it and then think " what the hell is that? Oh it's that music from Callan the movie!" And I haven't actually seen it in years.

That's the Larry Adler harmonica theme isn't it .... I quite like it too.

Wasn't there a spin-off to "The Fall And Rise Of Reginald Perrin"

I recall that I started watching it but that it simply disappaered from TV mid-series....?

There was a TV series follow-up which I thought was crap.

"The Legacy of Reginald Perrin" (1996)

Other spin-offs would include the 'Up' films

Up Pompeii - Liked that one (even had Michael Hordern in) and survives the years better that the TV series IMHO

Chastity Belt & Front are a bit threadbare

Morecambe and Wise's films can in a sense be considered spin-offs

The Intelligence Men - Like it despite its poor reputation
That Riviera Touch - Stands up quite well
The Magnificent Two - Poor IMHO

Night Train To Murder - Intended for the cinema but filmed on tape and disowned by EM and only shown after his death. Doesn't really work on any level.

It is truly dire .... I am not surprised EM disowned it.

It was the reason they left the BBC because they were offered the chance to do a film that might get a theatrical release.

I know I'm sad, but I quite like the Please Sir Film.

Even sadder, I like the Cilla Black song Sha la la la, at the end.

I really like the two Steptoe films. The Sweeneys are great as well, but Callan i think like many is the best of the lot.

One i would love to see though is the 1973 Man at the Top with Kenneth Haigh.
