Thumbs down The Best Tv Spin-off Movies

There were a whole shedload of these tv spin offs of comedy shows in the seventies and eighties.

I am aware that there some spin offs in the fifties ofshows like the Larkins, but it must have been the Till Death Us Do Part film that paved the way for a whole slew of these films.

A few of them were not bad at all, Porridge and the first Steptoe film being two examples that come to mind.

But I even look back on the bad ones with affection, I remember seeing, "Love Thy Neighbour." and "Man About the House," on a double bill a year or two after they first came out.

I even saw the first On the Buses Film three times, perhaps my Mum was punishing me for some misdemeanor and made me see it under sufferance.

It was very sad to see Yootha Joyce in the George and Mildred spin-off it was made shortly before her death.

There were a couple of variations on the tv spin-offs, Dick Emery's,"OOh You Are Awful." was a spin off of a sketch show rather than a sit-com,

A compilation of The Benny Hill Show was shown in cinemas and I have read since that it did good busines at the Box office.

One of the strangest spin-off films was one based on the short lived series "That's Your Funeral." starring Bill Fraser.

Apart from these spin=offs the only other uk comedies to be seen where the Carry On's and the Confessions, I was too young to see these, thre wasnt much else in the way of stand alone comedies.

Not a comedy, but IMHO the only TV spin-off worth watching more than once is Callan.

"The Sweeney" films are not bad. The "Callan" film I have on DVD, Im with Bats on that one, its excellent.
I always thought a big screen version of "The Professionals" would have been good, alas, the big screen version that never was!

Porridge is IMHO an above average spin-off

Non-comedies - The Quatermass films stand out to me

As stated elsewhere on Britmovie by myself I've never pursued this genre. But it would appear that Sweeney 2, Callan and The Quatermass flicks would be the dcream of the crop. Correct ?

I wouldn't argue with that.

Both the Dalek films have a certain charm. The first one is a miracle of economic story-telling - it introduces the Doctor, his two grand-daughters, the older one's boyfriend, the Tardis and gets them onto the planet of the Daleks in exactly 6 minutes.

coincidentally i just bought both sweeney films at the weekend .sweeney 1 isnt that great i think ,dont understand why they had to make it so political .when you watch the sweeney you want to see sawn off shotguns and mk2 jags crashing into piles of cardboard boxes etc .at least they put that right in the second film .

Do you not find that spin off films are snippets from the series put together eg; Rising Damp, Nearest and dearest although i found the film funny but they are all from the series except put together differently for the films. I also hate it when they replace people from the series for the films in rising Damp Alan is replaced.
