There are very few British films I see that are anywhere near as subversive as the quirkier American independent movies that get made. I think it has to do with not having any overt political message

The question is, was Citizen Kane cult when it was released? Did cult films even exist in 1941? Or is it that Welles is regarded as such a pioneer now that films like Citizen Kane can be considered cult hits?

I think Citizen Kane became a cult before it was even finished!

And if the recent de Caprio movie about Howard Hughes is to be believed, Hells Angels was more cult than any before or since!!

Default Cultissimo....

I think cults films are personal "pantheon" for everyone, maybe Kubrick is one of rarest who knew he was doing a cult film (for lots of reasons) with" 2001...".
Somes for me : Beat the devil(Huston),Bridge Over the River Kwaï, Night of the Hunter, The Honey Pot (Manckiewicz)....and many others .

Cool No cut for cults....

And I think, that even if at the begining of a film to become cult there is a huge personal feeling, you can later on notice that you can share this with many other people, even on different approches.
